| X Factor 4 - Final 11 - The Performances |
The final 11 acts sing 'Songs From The Movies' tonight. As part of this week's preparations each act attended a masterclass given by Canadian super-songstress Celine Dion. Lots of Celine's tips registered with the acts, because most acts performed to a really good standard. It just goes to prove that constructive advice can go a long way. X Factor panel, please take note!
For a refresher on how the finalists performed and what the 4 mentors had to say, check out the links below... |
1. Hope Song: Lady Marmalade (Moulin Rouge , also Patti Labelle ) Film: Moulin Rouge |
| Does Hope's X Factor campaign have legs? Definitely, and all 10 of them are on full display during tonight's sexy performance of Lady Marmalade. Basque-ing in the X Factor limelight they strike a series of carefully choreographed poses around a glorified park bench. Not only are the girls living their dream, they're also playing out the fantasy of many a male viewer! Okay, there are a couple of wobbles (of the vocal variety) but overall this is a highly entertaining and eye-opening show-opening. |
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: ...Wow! Everybody loves it in the audience. I hope everybody likes it at home. ...As Simon said, "Girl power is back"! Sharon Osbourne: ...Listen, the Pussydoll Cats, or whatever they are... over here and it's all about Hope! Really! You are sassy, you look great, fantastic!... Dannii Minogue: ...We don't even need to speak tonight, the audience reaction says everything. Girl bands watch out! Simon Cowell: ...Based on that performance, best group we've ever had on the X Factor... Dermot O'Leary: ...Where have you been practising? Because I haven't any park benches like that around my end!
|
2. Leon Jackson Song: Home (Michael Bublé ) Film: The Wedding Date |
Celine Dion seems to really enjoy her masterclass with young Leon Jackson. "I don't know what happened last week, but he won me with the performance he did today." The X Factor audience are also won over by 18-year-old Leon's version of Michael Bublé's "Home". It's a fine vocal and a great song, and although his on-stage confidence still needs a bit of work, it's improving. Leon lets out a few smiles on stage this week, even while Simon Cowell tries to convince him he's looking petrified! Dannii has a much clearer take on the performance and she she reminds the Lothian lad that the audience cheers are all for him... ie. not for Mr Nasty!
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: ...you've got a good voice but you've got no charisma, you've got no personality and you've got no confidence. But you picked a very good song. And Westlife have that song in the charts on Monday. Sharon Osbourne: ....You have great vulnerability...You sang it really well. Just have more confidence... You're great. Simon Cowell: Leon, you have the look of someone who's been invited in for a quiet chat in Louis's dressing room... You're so afraid, you're making the audience afraid... Audience member: Rubbish! Dannii Minogue: You brought it 'Home' tonight! (Crowd cheer loudly) Listen to that! That's for you! That's for you!
|
3. Beverley Trotman Song: I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston ) Film: The Bodyguard |
| Last week we really enjoyed Beverley's debut performance of "I Will Survive", but on tonight's intro VT it seems like Beverley and mentor Louis weren't so happy with it.
Beverley is determined to be more true to herself for tonight's 'Movies' themed performance. There are no dancers, no wigs, just 'Bev' and that big voice of hers. Whitney's "I Have Nothing" is a bold choice but Beverley scales those Houston hurdles like a walk in the park. The lyrics (" ¯ Take me for what I am ¯ ") echo Beverley's mood. It's a powerful, passionate, soulful delivery. We've forgotten this is a Whitney classic, it's all about Beverley. It's great! |
Panel-Bites: Sharon Osbourne: You're a working woman, a mum, with a huge dream, and this show will make your dream come true. ...I think that silly wig you had on last week was keeping it all in... I love ya! Dannii Minogue: I think you're inspirational to women, I really do... You did so great. Simon Cowell: Well, after the disaster last week that was amazing... Because of your emotion, your determination, you actually made it special. Good for you! Louis Walsh: ...Really proud of you, because we saw the real Beverley... One of the nicest people I have ever dealt with on any of these competitions... you're a genuinely, really good person. Beverley: (To Dermot) I just need to do something really quickly. This is for all the girls out there. (Hugs him) Dermot O'Leary: Beverley, I'm all yours! Don't share me. Beverley really wants there to be a sequel to that performance and after that so do I!

4. Alisha Bennett Song: Say A Little Prayer For You (Dionne Warwick , Aretha Franklin ) Film: My Best Friend's Wedding |
Alisha's confidence took a knock last week after landing a place in the bottom 2 on final 12 night. Her masterclass with Celine Dion did a lot to restore her faith. Celine loved Alisha's cute finger-snappy mannerisms and assured her "You have what it takes". Looking as pretty as a present wrapped up in a pink bow, Alisha hits the stage with the Bacharach/David number "Say A Little Prayer For You". It's all very eye-catching but still not quite convincing on an emotional level. Alisha seems to be acting out the song rather than feeling it and there are a few nervy wobbles here and there which affect her vocal quality.
Alisha has it all, but hasn't got it all together yet. Simon's critique is fair, we haven't seen who Alisha is yet. Hopefully, if she's makes it to next week, she'll turn up on stage and let herself out of the cage.
Panel-Bites: Alisha: Hello! Louis Walsh: ...I definitely made the right decision last week, saving you... You have come out looking like a baby Whitney or something and you really got it goin' on and I think you're back in the race now... Dannii Minogue: ...You look gorgeous but let me say... I don't think we've seen the best of you. I think it's yet to come. Alisha: I know. There is more to come, you're right. You're right! Simon Cowell: Alisha, you look pretty , it was cute, it was pleasant. Is it good enough to win this competition? (Audience shout 'Yes!') ...No... because it's not individual enough... I don't know who you are at the moment. Sharon Osbourne: ...It took a lot for us both to get back up here, but believe me, you've made your mark and I'm proud of you.

5. Same Difference Song: Breaking Free (The Cast of High School Musical ) Film: High School Musical |
| Last week Louis Walsh slammed Same Difference for being "cheesy" and he brands tonight's High School Musical number as "a joke". Conversely, Celine Dion seems to have taken them into her family "when I'm with my brothers and sisters I get that smile too." There's no doubt about it, Sarah and Sean are just happy and it's highly infectious! (Okay, so Louis had the vaccination.)
Tonight, they deliver another well choreographed, upbeat spoonful of sugar. It's a medicine that goes down well with the audience and we're sure that there's many a young kid out there in tv land jumping up and down, flapping their happy hands.
Forgetting Louis... (and Same Difference wish they could!) ...the panel love it. Louis, who's early reputation was based on Eurovision success, labels it "very kitsch and camp". Now surely he means that as a compliment?! |
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: ...Better than last week, but I honestly don't get this act... I used to watch Eurovision in the 70s, these strange acts from Eastern Europe... That's what you remind me of... Sharon Osbourne: I love you! You (Sarah) are like a young Olivia Newton John. You're fantastic! You're really genuine and lovely! I just love you guys! Dannii Minogue: When you guys are around, everyone smiles, including this man!... There should be a movie written for you guys to sing, dance... act in. Simon Cowell: ...I loved this performance tonight, because you're having fun, you know who you are, you chose the perfect song and you totally and utterly nailed it. Louis... this is about pop music... you're coming over... as a very unhappy grey old man. Louis Walsh: No, I am happy, but you told me last week you thought they were gonna be in the final. Simon Cowell: They will be. Louis Walsh: They will in the final but they will be in the audience. Sean: ...Louis, really, we've worked so hard this week and I really wish we could somehow do something that could change your mind about us. Louis Walsh: It's not my type of music. It's very dated. It's what Simon's into. It's very kitsch and camp... Dermot O'Leary: You don't like kitsch and camp?
|
Daniel impressed Celine Dion so much during rehearsals that she wants to buy tickets for his concert already! However, the Foundations song Louis has selected for Daniel could well shake his foundations in this contest.
Unfortunately this bouncy, Tamla-styled, UK soul song doesn't seem to suit Daniel's voice at all. Dance master Dan shows off plenty of moves on stage. Yes, the spins and things are impressive, but they probably aren't helping his vocal which is only good in parts.
Louis' panel colleagues all slam the song choice, but Louis thinks the people at home are going to pick up their phones and vote. Daniel will be hoping Louis is at least right about one thing tonight!
Panel-Bites: Sharon Osbourne: I think you belong in a boy band... I just don't see you as a solo artist. Dannii Minogue: I want to see you choose your own songs. Louis, what was that song? Louis Walsh: That's a song that everybody loves everywhere. Dannii Minogue: (To Daniel) Do you love it? Daniel: It's an anthemic song... (Eventually...) It's a great song, yes, it's a great song! Simon Cowell: ...'Fire Louis'... The song was a joke... He has no idea who you are... Louis that was a disgraceful performance. Louis Walsh: In your opinion! Simon Cowell: Yeah... it came over as a dancer trying to sing rather than a singer who can dance. Louis Walsh: ...At least he is trying... He owned the stage. He sang, he danced... It's the people at home that lift their phones and vote and I know they will vote because you're such a nice guy.
Dermot O'Leary: ...Are you happy with the song? Daniel: Well you know, Louis asked me to sing the song, it's a great song, I think the public love it. The audience seemed to be having a good time... (Cheers)

7. Rhydian Roberts Song: Phantom Of The Opera (Michael Crawford ) Film: Phantom Of The Opera |
| Phantom Of The Opera seems like the perfect song for Rhydian. It's dramatic, intense and demands a great vocal. Rhydian delivers on all levels. It's another brilliant, compelling performance.
At last Sharon Osbourne says she's "sorted out the problem" she had with Rhydian, explaining "you're a much bigger drama queen than I am... But a drama queen with a brilliant voice."
Yes, things are looking up for the Welshman, but we do wonder whether he's heading towards becoming a melodramatic stereotype. We hope to see him try something a little less over the top in the next week or two, to give us a more complete picture of what he's capable of as an artist. |
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: ...There are one or two people in this competition who are head and shoulders above everybody. You are one of them. ...Star quality. ...Stage presence ...This show is gonna change your life. Sharon Osbourne: Rhydian, I think I've sorted out the problem that I had with you. You see, you're a much bigger drama queen than I am. (Laughter) But a drama queen with a brilliant voice. Simon Cowell: ...There's no question or doubt, you're barking mad. But I like that... I think that you proved that not only you are good, you are potentially world class. Dannii Minogue: I want to remind you all ... Simon Cowell: And I think it was my decision to put him there. Dannii Minogue: Get away! Simon Cowell: I mean it. Dannii Minogue: ...It's his second performance on stage ever ...After his first performance Andrew Lloyd Webber agreed to change that song into a solo artist for this man. He is a world star. Rhydian: (To Dermot)...I'm just so grateful I've got this opportunity to meet the likes of Celine Dion, to speak to Lord Lloyd Webber and arrange the song for me... it was amazing.

8. Emily Nakanda Song: I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman (Britney Spears ) Film: Crossroads |
Emily's Crossroads song choice is apt for her tender age. Indeed, she is at the crossroads between childhood and womanhood, and she delivers this song very believably. Although technically it's not a perfect vocal, there's a lot of tonal qualities to her voice that we really love. There's also an intangible honesty and vulnerability about her that reaches out through the camera and connects. Simon pans the performance as flat, but when Emily stands her ground by reminding him "this song relates to a lot of kids out there who are in that stage between being a girl and a woman, like me", he acknowledges her integrity with an admiring smile.
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: Emily, you're a really nice girl. ...Nice performance ...A little bit safe ...Hard job following Rhydian, but you're only 15... I think you're vulnerable, if I'm honest. Dannii Minogue: ...Great to see you growing in confidence and you are so likeable. I want everyone at home to know, you are just adorable! Mwah! Simon Cowell: Ah, Emily ... it was flat. (Boos) Sharon Osbourne: Like the top of his head. Emily: My singing or the performance, Simon? Simon Cowell: Your singing, yeah. That's the problem. (Boos) Sharon Osbourne: Did you hear that? They didn't agree with him... You did really, really good tonight. You should be very proud of yourself. I'm very proud of you. Dermot O'Leary: ...What do you think of the comments there? Emily: I'd like to sing powerfully but this song relates to a lot of kids out there who are in that stage between being a girl and a woman, like me. I'm doing something huge, you know. I'm trying to get the people to feel what I'm feeling now and this song did that, Simon, it did. Dermot O'Leary: ...Ladies and gentlemen, Emily! (Emily exits) Spirited girl!
|
9. Futureproof Song: If You Don't Know Me By Now (Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes ) Film: My Girl |
| Last Saturday Simon thought Futureproof did really well with their debut rendition of "She's The One". Now, looking back he says he's "not that happy" with how they did. Oh dear! Well, at least it gives the guys something to aim for this week! They do a fabulous job with this Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes classic soul number. There are great harmonies and some outstanding solo moments, particularly from Adam and Richard. Simon says they nailed it... of course he may change his mind by next week, but we don't think the viewers will! |
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: ...Much better than last week ... the styling... the melodies... I think Simon is actually working harder on the girls than he is on the boys. Sharon Osbourne: ...Each time I see you, I love you more and more... It's time that there was a new boy band around! And you're gonna do it! Dannii Minogue: You guys are amazing and let's just say, probably the first boy band where everyone actually sings in tune, no? (The boys laugh) Simon Cowell: ...This week you nailed that... You've got some chemistry, you're having fun. Timing was out a couple of places. But... vocally, that was on the money. Aaron: (To Dermot) ...This song was more intuitive for us. We felt it more. Last week was a bit... not our kind of thing... This week we feel that we done ourselves proud.
|
10. Andy Williams Song: Stayin' Alive (The Bee Gees ) Film: Saturday Night Fever |
Andy didn't enjoy Simon Cowell's comments last week, he complains that "They kind of implied that I was just a pretty face and was just getting by, by that." His Saturday Night Fever number tonight couldn't be more different to last Saturday's doleful number. However, when Celine Dion says this is a difficult song to sing solo she should know! Andy proves Celine right. All credit to him for giving it his best shot, with lots of energy and some impressive Travolta-esqe footwork, but he's just one man battling in our brains against 3 Bee Gees. It's too much of an ask. Louis enjoys a bit of payback, letting Dannii know she's boobed with the song choice. Dannii insists Andy carried the song, but we're not so confident that the Welsh lad's X Factor dream will be 'Stayin' Alive' after the results show later tonight.
Panel-Bites: Louis Walsh: Andy ... you're a talented guy. But that song was a big mistake...it was bad karaoke... somebody made a mistake, and that somebody is Dannii. Sharon Osbourne: Andy ... Iconic song, I mean huge shoes to fill here... It was a little bit weak but you did your best. Simon Cowell: ...I loved the dancers... It was a little bit better than last week but it was basically 'bloke on a Saturday night singing karaoke'. (Boos) Dannii Minogue: Andy, you know what? The audience says everything... You're enough to carry this song... We love you! Dermot O'Leary: ...what do you make of the comments?... Andy: I... thought I'd have a crack at... something a bit different and not be pigeonholed... I just hope they vote.
|
11. Niki Evans Song: My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion ) Film: Titanic |
| Last week Simon encouraged Niki to believe in herself more. The fact that she's singing Celine Dion's ultimate movie number, with Celine in the house tonight, would suggest that Niki is doing just that. Niki does Celine proud with a fine performance and no trace of nerves. She's clearly feeling every word as she delivers a perfect vocal straight from that heart of hers... which will go on, just like her X Factor journey will too! |
Panel-Bites: Sharon Osbourne: ...Really brave woman singing this song in Celine Dion's presence... Brilliant job! ...Last week, this week, performance of the night! Dannii Minogue: Niki, all I have to say is you're gonna be in this competition for a very long time. Simon Cowell: ...To be fair, I warned you about singing this song on the night Celine Dion is on the show. And you know what? You pulled it off ...I want you to remember this night as the night you started to believe in yourself... Louis Walsh: ...I gave you the challenge and you won. And you know, I'm so happy with you. I think you could be in the final. I really do.
