Kimberley Southwick kicks off the X Factor 4 live shows, singing 'It's Raining Men'1. Kimberley Southwick
Song: It's Raining Men Download 'It's Raining Men' at iTunes Check out 'It's Raining Men' at Amazon.co.uk (The Weather Girls Download 'The Weather Girls' tracks at iTunes Check out 'The Weather Girls' at Amazon.co.uk, Geri Halliwell Download 'Geri Halliwell' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Geri Halliwell' at Amazon.co.uk)

A shaky start, but once the explosive lighting effects kick in, so does Kimberley. It's a fun performance. She keeps her vocal strong even while she's being carried about the stage by 5 strapping male dancers!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:   Kimberley you bring the fun factor to 'X Factor'... not the best singer in the world, but who cares?

Dannii Minogue:   ...You have a fantastic voice! Where you are going to stumble is when you over do it... but there is a lot more to see from you...

Simon Cowell:   ...It was fine, if you like karaoke on a big budget!...Nothing wrong with it. Look, it was fun.... Lots of personality. It was a bit shreiky ...but it was fun. Fun!

Sharon Osbourne:   You have the toughest gig to open this show. You did just fine!

Kimberley: I feel alive!... Simon... that's fine but I still fancy you.

2. Andy Williams
Song: I Don't Want To Talk About It Download 'I Don't Want To Talk About It' at iTunes Check out 'I Don't Want To Talk About It' at Amazon.co.uk (Rod Stewart Download 'Rod Stewart' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Rod Stewart' at Amazon.co.uk, Everything But The Girl Download 'Everything But The Girl' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Everything But The Girl' at Amazon.co.uk)

Andy's voice sounds okay, but this is a quirky dirge of a song with no standout vocal moments. On the plus side for Andy, he's got a face teenage girls would cry for, and those dreamy-eyed gazes through camera are sure to hit home and have many a heart throbbing.

Andy Williams makes his debut on the X Factor Live stage with a Rod Stewart ballad.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:   ...I love the kind of Welsh thing in your voice. I predict you are going to go a long, long way in this competition...

Sharon Osbourne:   ...Divine... fabulous young man. (Cheering And Applause) Are you glad it's over, the song?

Simon Cowell:   ...you're very good at what you do down the camera lens... It was a bit wet... I do think you're capable of more...

Dannii Minogue:   ...I love seeing you in your comfort zone... I just wanna say, we've got so much more to show from you to come.

Andy: (On the judges comments) Generally quite good, fair play ...it went well I think....

Male Audience member: We love you Andy!

Dermot O'Leary:   Big gruff man likes you over there Andy.

Futureproof face the panel.3. Future Proof
Song: She's The One Download 'She's The One' at iTunes Check out 'She's The One' at Amazon.co.uk (Robbie Williams Download 'Robbie Williams' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Robbie Williams' at Amazon.co.uk)

Aaron, Adam, Matthew, Richard and Sean, applied as soloists. Now, thanks to Louis they are 'Future Proof' and keen to prove they have a future in music. Richard Wilkinson's voice is first to feature. He sounds great and seems totally unaware that he's wearing his tie on the outside of his jumper! These guys look and sing like seasoned pros. Do they have a future? We think so!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:   ...I think there's two or three really good voices Simon... in this band. It was bit of a safe performance for the first night.

Sharon Osbourne:   Guys, you have all worked so hard and it has paid off....

Dannii Minogue:   What I am really excited about but scared about is that you guys are good ...a few tuning problems hitting your harmonies ...you look great, and Sean... (Sexy wink!) ...very good.

Simon Cowell:   ...I thought for the first performance, you did really, really well ...I think we've got a really good group here.

4. Beverley Trotman
Song: I Will Survive Download 'I Will Survive' at iTunes Check out 'I Will Survive' at Amazon.co.uk (Gloria Gaynor Download 'Gloria Gaynor' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Gloria Gaynor' at Amazon.co.uk)

Beverley has fun during this live stage debut, strutting around persued by a male dancer who she gleefully pushes off the stage. Vocally, she's knocking this one out the park. She doesn't do a great deal of dancing, but she shimmies to the beat and has quite a natural stage manner. Overall it's an accomplished feel good first outing for Beverley, and we agree with her mentor Louis, she will survive!

Beverley Trotman Survives!

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:   Missus! Missus! Beverley! Woo! Who knew! ...Amazing. Great soul voice. You're fantastic. Love ya.

Dannii Minogue:   Beverley, amazing transformation... Love the way you sang the song... Few bum notes here and there but it's gotta be down to nerves...

Simon Cowell:   ...You look terrific. Okay, negative first... It was very 'Stars In Their Eyes' I thought ...It was very copy-cat. It was fun. It will be popular. You can't dance, by the way. ..

Louis Walsh:   Listen... she's a fantastic singer and that's why I chose her. And Beverley, I know you have an awful lot more to give in this competition and I believe in you totally and I hope everybody votes for you and you will survive!

Emily Nakanda sings 'I Knew You Were Waiting'.5. Emily Nakanda
Song: I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) Download 'I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)' at iTunes Check out 'I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)' at Amazon.co.uk (George Michael Download 'George Michael' tracks at iTunes Check out 'George Michael' at Amazon.co.uk and Aretha Franklin Download 'Aretha Franklin' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Aretha Franklin' at Amazon.co.uk)

Sporting a stripey purple blazer with her hair coiffed into a subtle fauxhawk, Emily is a picture of joyful wide-eyed innocence. There's also a resonant quality in her vocal that has very distinctive ear-appeal. Okay, perhaps just a few notes are a wee bit flat, but they don't mar our enjoyment of the song. This is a very solid and entertaining live stage debut for X Factor's baby-girl.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  ...You're 15 years old! You did amazing. You've got a great raw talent. However, I would love to hear you do a big ballad.

Dannii Minogue:  Emily, the song had a great playfulness to it which is so much part of your personality, but I think the execution didn't quite follow through.

Simon Cowell:  Emily, ...I'm gonna say what I think everyone at home watching this will be saying as well, is that is the vocals weren't great in the middle of the track, they were a bit flat.

Sharon Osbourne:  Emily, believe me, we have all heard a lot worse than that... It's really hard because you are typically a ballad singer and it's hard for you to come in and be bubbly, dancing, and doing it all and your homework at the same time ...you did just fine.

Emily: (On the judges) The comments were completely fair and I will take them into account.

Dermot O'Leary:  ...to be fair to Emily ...big ask today ...you've lowered the age range this year, ...we're asking a lot of her ...Am I right?

Simon Cowell:  ...Dermot, you've gotta treat everybody as if they're the same age. ...I don't believe in patronising people.

Sharon Osbourne:  No, I don't either but she can't put in the same amount of time as everybody else because of the age.

Simon Cowell:  Then she shouldn't have entered the competition.

Sharon Osbourne:  Rubbish! You shouldn't have lowered it to that age. (Applause)

6. Leon Jackson
Song: Can't Buy Me Love  Check out 'Can't Buy Me Love' at Amazon.co.uk (The Beatles Download 'The Beatles' tracks at iTunes Check out 'The Beatles' at Amazon.co.uk)

Leon's sounding pretty jazzy and looking pretty snazzy in his light khaki suit with red tie. It's a rather jumpy, edgy arrangement which doesn't quite suit this early Beatles classic. There are a few stiff movements, but it's hard to know if these are due to nerves or if it's just a jumpy jazzy choreography. This isn't a perfect performance from Leon, but we don't believe it's the disaster the judges make it out to be.

Leon Jackson sings The Beatles the Buble way.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  Leon, when I first saw you... I thought you were an amazing, amazing talent ...and you come out tonight ...You lost all the melody. It was a dreadful arrangement! ...You are great but the song was a disaster.

Sharon Osbourne:  Hi sweet boy... you do have a really, really good voice ...and you've got a really likeable personality... I just think... the song, the arrangement... it was all a bit frantic, all a bit, you know....'woo-oo'... and, um, wasn't good.

Simon Cowell:  ...That was a complete and utter nightmare. The arrangement was terrible, your timing was all over the place, it was a complete mess and I think you've taken the place of somebody else who should be in the show...

Dannii Minogue:  Leon, let me just say you only lost it in the middle section. You chose the hardest song... it's music that you're passionate about...

Leon: (To the judges) I'll try and take your comments on board. So, thanks very much for your comments.

Same Difference keep in 'Steps' while singing 'Tragedy'!7. Same Difference
Song: Tragedy Download 'Tragedy' at iTunes Check out 'Tragedy' at Amazon.co.uk (Bee Gees Download 'Bee Gees' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Bee Gees' at Amazon.co.uk, Steps Download 'Steps' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Steps' at Amazon.co.uk)

High voltage and vocally crisp, Sean and Sarah deliver a near Steps perfect performance. Louis has already branded them as "cheesy" and he says they make The MacDonalds look like Lennon and McCartney. However it does sound like he's having more of a go at Simon than the brother and sister duo.

Seems like Dermot O'Leary can't tell the difference between Same Difference, because he kisses them both!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  The song was called 'Tragedy', I think it should have been called 'Disaster' (Boos)... He slagged me last year when I had the McDonald's... yee make the McDonald's look like Lennon and McCartney... It's cheesy, it's Butlins, it's 80s, but it's very Simon Cowell.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...You are definitely double cheese burger with bacon! But, you know what? I love cheese burgers and I love bacon!

Dannii Minogue:  I think there is probably a huge market who'd buy your albums. It's very entertaining... Don't push it on the vocals because there was screeching often and clashing at some points... that might have been too much skipping!

Simon Cowell:  Guys, I would just like to be you two for an hour a day so I could be happy! ...the biggest group in the world right now is 'High School Musical' and I think you appeal to the same audience. Louis... you've made yourself sound like a miserable old man.

Sarah: Erm, thank you for your comments, Louis, but we hope we that we're here next week so we can get you cheesy. Because we know you love it really.

8. Niki Evans
Song: Nothing compares 2 U Download 'Nothing compares 2 U' at iTunes Check out 'Nothing compares 2 U' at Amazon.co.uk (Sinéad O'Connor Download 'Sinéad O'Connor' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Sinéad O'Connor' at Amazon.co.uk)

When shaven headed Sinéad O'Connor sang this Prince song in one full face take to camera she made an indelible mark on the music wall of fame. Dressed in black, Niki stands, sings the song, and feels every word. Okay, now we are not saying Niki's abbreviated rendition is better than Sinéad's, but it does compare. The judges know how good Niki is, as do the cheering audience. Simon simply wants Niki to start knowing it too!

Niki Evans sings a heartfelt 'Nothing Compares 2 U'

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:  ...I tell you, missus, you are in a class of your own. (Cheers) Best performance tonight.

Dannii Minogue:  Niki, you're a real singer and I don't know if you've quite grasped that yet and that's so endearing ...I loved that performance!

Niki: Thank you. (Cheering And Applause)

Simon Cowell:  ...The first time we saw you we heard this incredible story about your dad and then you were so surprised when we said you were good. Now you have to put that behind you, because you are good. In fact you're more than good, that was actually fantastic. Now you have to lift your shoulders, you have to believe that you could win... (To Louis) ...You owe her and the rest of your competitors an apology.

Louis Walsh:  ...I'm not apologising to you!

Simon Cowell:  To her!

Louis Walsh:  Niki!.... Niki and I are friends. Niki, are you happy working with me?

Niki: I love you, Louis. (Blows him a kiss) You're the best one.

Louis Walsh:  ...That's the performance of the night so far. You nailed it and it was absolutely amazing.

Alisha Bennett sings Gabrielle's 'Dreams'.9. Alisha Bennett
Song: Dreams Download 'Dreams' at iTunes Check out 'Dreams' at Amazon.co.uk (Gabrielle Download 'Gabrielle' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Gabrielle' at Amazon.co.uk)

Alisha was worried she'd stumble down the stage-steps. It sounded like a mini confidence-crisis, but happily Alisha doesn't trip up on stage tonight. She sings most of her Gabrielle number framed like a living portrait. Dressed in blue, and blessed with a lovely little face, Alisha certainly paints a pretty picture. The only problem is that she appears to be just a little bit terrified. Her voice and posture are tightening up just when she really needs to let loose and pump some emotion into this song. The panel all recognise that this young lady has bags of potential, however Simon Cowell also recognises that Alisha "may be vulnerable tonight".

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  Wow! You already look like a diva. ...You sing great, you dance great. I loved the whole performance. ...I wasn't crazy about your song, but I love you.

Dannii Minogue:  Song sounded good. There's interesting bits to your voice that are raspy but make sure they don't get annoying throughout ...It was really cool but you've gotta connect with your eyes down the camera.

Simon Cowell:  I'm not sure... that that was the right song for you because the song does that ('Stays on one level' - Simon raises a flat hand), it doesn't do anything more than that. Um, and I think you may be vulnerable tonight after that performance. (Murmurs)

Sharon Osbourne:  I love her and it's my fault, I chose the song and I have to agree with everyone here. Crap song, I chose it. You didn't. I made you sing it. Get rid of me, not her.

Dermot O'Leary:  Do you agree with what Sharon said about the song?

Alisha: Erm, you know, it's nerves. I have let nerves get to me a bit and you will... if you keep me in you'll get to see the real me, trust me.

10. Rhydian Roberts
Song: I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) Download 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' at iTunes Check out 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' at Amazon.co.uk (Meat Loaf Download 'Meat Loaf' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Meat Loaf' at Amazon.co.uk)

Rhydian Roberts has already made a big impression and not just because of his voice. Ever since Sharon Osbourne's spleen venting reaction to his audition it's certainly been very hard to ignore him. During his dramatic performance Rhydian lunges all around the stage and booms out a strong, intense vocal. It's exactly what's required for this classic OTT Meat Loaf ballad.

Even Mrs O hasn't got a bad word to say about Rhydian's rendition tonight. She does however call him a "Strange boy, weird boy."  Adding that "Mamma doesn't know what to make of you" and asking "Can I see your chest?" Hmmm, you know Sharon can be a little strange at times too! Anyhow Sharon, although Rhydian would do anything for love... he won't do that! Maybe later, if we keep him in.

Rhydian Roberts powers out Meatloaf's 'I Will Do Anything For Love'.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  Rhydian ...You're arrogant, you're pompous, you're ambitious and you're talented. You remind me of Simon in the first three ...You are talented and I think we're going to see a lot more from you.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...Sweet boy. Strange boy. Weird boy. Mamma doesn't know what to make of you. Can I see your chest? ...Actually I must say you do have a very good voice, very strong. You are barking...but... in a good way. That's just my opinion! Goodbye.

Simon Cowell:  ...By far the best performance we have had tonight... You are the one person I would look forward to seeing week on week.

Dannii Minogue:  Looks like Marmite is back in vogue then! I thought that was just genius... And it's the tip of the iceberg of what we have to show them...

Simon Cowell:  Dannii ...I just wanna say... because you have had some interesting press... You are actually a very nice, polite person, so I wanted to say that.

Rhydian: (On the judges) I will take on board what they said. I also want to say happy birthday to Dannii... she's a fantastic mentor. I just want to stay in hopefully to prove that I'm not just an egotistical maniac, I'm a performer, but then, offstage, I'm also human.

Daniel De Bourg sings 'Heaven'11. Daniel De Bourg
Song: Heaven Download 'Heaven' at iTunes Check out 'Heaven' at Amazon.co.uk (Bryan Adams Download 'Bryan Adams' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Bryan Adams' at Amazon.co.uk, DJ Sammy Download 'DJ Sammy' tracks at iTunes Check out 'DJ Sammy' at Amazon.co.uk)

Daniel requested "Heaven" as his first live X Factor number because it reminds him of his now departed mother and father. Bryan Adams wrote this song and sang it as a rock ballad. However, Daniel's version is more in line with the softer "DJ Sammy" version. (Incidentally, not sung by DJ Sammy, but by Dutch singer "Do" aka "Dominique Van Hulst") Daniel's smoky vocal pours straight from his heart, but a few too many off-key moments detract from the performance. However, he's very real, very watchable and he looks like a star.

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:  Smile! Smile for the mother. Um, it was very nice. Bit touchy-feely, you know, all of that... bit dramatic, but it was very nice.

Dannii Minogue:  The vocals improved since the rehearsal today... A bit robotic with the movements. Understandable. Put it down to nerves.

Simon Cowell:  ...it was a bit boring really, because you're not a rock singer... I am used to hearing the Bryan Adams version with a rock voice... It is a bit like... like eating water for dinner. It doesn't leave you with anything.

Louis Walsh:  Daniel, it wasn't the best performance of the night. I'm not going to patronise you... You will have to work harder to stay in the competition.

Dermot O'Leary:  Did you think that was the right song for you?

Daniel: For the first show, absolutely definitely. I wanted to sing it and I want to thank Louis for letting me sing it.

12. Hope
Song: Umbrella Download 'Umbrella' at iTunes Check out 'Umbrella' at Amazon.co.uk (Rihanna Download 'Rihanna' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Rihanna' at Amazon.co.uk)

Hope, like Future Proof, were formed at boot camp at the behest of Louis Walsh, who happens to know a thing or two about boy and girl bands. Louis thinks they can be the UK's Pussycat Dolls and they certainly have the seX Factor. Raquelle Gracie's revealing top makes her a strong contender for the Nicole Scherzinger role in this interesting 5-piece vocal ensemble.

Hope deliver an appealing and polished version of Rihanna's record breaking UK number one.Baby of the band, Phoebe Brown, 16, is a standout meriting special mention from Simon. However, Phoebe admits she's worried. No, she's not worried about her performance, but, as she explains to Dermot O'Leary, "My parents will definitely kill me, I'm showing too much flesh."

'Hope' once 5 soloists now singing under the same umbrella!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  ...You look like you have been doing this for years ...you came out, you sang, you look incredible. You are like the UK's version of the Pussycat Dolls.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...I have a problem... you are good looking, sexy, you can sing and I hate ya! (Laughter) Seriously, well done. I know... fantastic, really.

Dannii Minogue:  Louis, Louis, Louis, Louis. Thank you for your experiment idea of letting them put this together, because I think both bands have done really well tonight ...It was good.

Simon Cowell:  ...I totally agree with Louis, it was as good as anybody you see in the charts today and I have to pay special... to you, Phoebe ...Most importantly you girls have seemed to have sorted out whatever problems you've had.

Dermot O'Leary:  And lastly, Phoebe, you said, you sort of pointed to your outfit and you went, "My mum is going to kill me!"  ...She will be proud of you now, right?

Phoebe: Yeah, but my parents will still kill me 'cause I am showing too much flesh... but it doesn't matter...
