Song 2

Shayne Ward can afford to smile as he hears The X Factor judges praising his performance of "If Tommorow Never Comes".
Ronan Keating's number is a late change of plan for Shayne, who was originally scheduled to sing Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now". The swap is due to some problems that he's been experiencing with his voice this week.
He does a great job and delivers the song without a hint of the vocal trouble. It's quite an achievement, considering that Shayne only had 24 hours to learn this song from scratch!
Shayne also manages to project a bit of an Irish lilt onto his vocal. Sharon quizzes him about it during her critique. Shayne makes his mentor Louis Walsh a happy man by proudly explaining to Sharon "That's because I am Irish!".
Louis, who originally had a hand in selecting this number for Ronan Keating, is less happy with Simon Cowell, who labels it as "quite a boring song"!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  (Introduction) Okay everybody I've just got one act left. He's young, he's exciting, he's from Manchester. His name is Shayne!

Intro clip...

Shayne:  The way my life is at the moment it's unbelievable. When I was at the premiere I just thought to myself "Hang on, do I belong here?" I was expecting someone to actually shout at me, like "Oi you! Get off!" And it just didn't happen. (Spaaking at the premiere...) Right now I am the happiest I've been in a long time. It's fantastic.

Louis Walsh:  Shayne has been working for this and dreaming of this for so many years.

Shayne:  Every kid has a dream when they're growing up, mine was to become a singer and I feel like it's happening.

Louis Walsh:  I saw the star quality in Shayne from the very, very first audition, this is his chance of a lifetime.

Shayne:  I feel like my life is changing and I just hope that this is the beginning.

Louis Walsh:  I don't think any of us realises how big Shayne could be, but he needs that chance.

Shayne sings...

Kate Thornton:  Simon, your comments please?

Simon Cowell:  Shayne you know, I mean I... you've had a tough week this week, 'cause I know that you had to change your song last night, you had to learn that in 24 hours... and with quite a boring song you did a good job.

Shayne:  Thank you very much.

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you Simon. Sharon?

Sharon Osbourne:  Yeah very... you sound very Irish when you sing that song?

Shayne:  (Smiling, holding his hands up) That's because I am Irish!

Louis Walsh:  (Grinning proudly) He is Irish...

Sharon Osbourne:  (Excited) Oh he's Irish! Oh!

Louis Walsh:  Yes.

Simon Cowell:  Tonight he's Irish.

Sharon Osbourne:  Tonight! ... No it was very good. In all seriousness it was very good Shayne. Well done.

Kate Thornton:  Thank you Sharon. Thank you. Louis? You're mentoring Shayne. What did you think of that?.

Louis Walsh:  You know Simon, I don't think it is a very boring song at all, I think it's a great song. I picked that song for Ronan. (Cheers) And I think...

Sharon Osbourne:  Well, you're Irish!

Louis Walsh:  ... I think you did a great, great job and I think Shayne has it. He's got... he's got the extra factor. But we need votes! (Cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you judges. So you heard Louis. He needs your votes. Are you going to vote for Shayne? (Kate gives out the voting numbers etc) ...We're gonna see you again later, but for now, let's hear it for Shayne. (Shayne kisses Kate and walks off, waving to the audience)

Song 1

Despite problems with his voice during the week Shayne Ward delivers a near faultless rendition of "Unchained Melody" on X Factor semi-final night.
Shayne's second song tonight is the ever popular "Unchained Melody". He turns in a brilliant vocal performance and shows he has a high register to rival even that of the late great Bobby Hatfield.
Despite his difficult week Shayne retains his confident and self-assured demeanour on stage. The only hint of his voice trouble comes on the very last note which wavers slightly.
His mentor Louis is desperate to see him go through to next week's final, and from the sound of Simon and Sharon's comments, they'd be quite happy about that too!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  (Introduction) Okay Kate it's... I've only got one act left guys.

Simon Cowell:  Yep, you keep saying that.

Louis Walsh:  He's young, he's talented, he's good looking, he is from Manchester and his name is Shayne Ward.

Shayne sings...

Kate Thornton:  Okay, Simon your comments please?

Simon Cowell:  Oh Shayne, Shayne, Shayne! ... (Smiling) You needed that, didn't you? Ehm, that was a fantastic performance...

Shayne:  (Smiling) Thank you Simon. Thank you.

Simon Cowell:  (Cheers) ...Fan-tastic! You know I felt... I felt for you tonight. I know you've had a tough 24 hours and you're there amongst the seasoned singers and you're a young kid... but I've gotta tell you, you held your own tonight and boy do you deserve... even if Louis doesn't say it... to be in that final next week. (Cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Thank you very much Simon. Sharon?

Sharon Osbourne:  You know what people say, "you should never believe what they say in the papers", and they said you'd lost your voice! But you haven't, and you nailed it. You absolutely nailed it. (Cheers) Your voice is spectacular.

Kate Thornton:  Thank you very much Sharon. Louis?

Louis Walsh:  Shayne, that was an incredible performance of a song that's so flogged... but you made it your own and I'm really, really proud to be working with you. But I need votes guys. I don't want to lose him.

Simon Cowell:  Do you want him to be in the final, Louis?

Louis Walsh:  I want him in the final, I want him to win the final, and I want votes! I really do! (Cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Thank you very much judges. Er, Shayne, you've heard what they've got to say.

Shayne:  I have.

Kate Thornton:  What would you like to say back?

Shayne:  Thank you so much for your comments. That is just brilliant.

Audience Member:  We love Shayne. Yeah!

Shayne:  Thank you. Please, if any... all the people that are watching at home, please vote for me, I want to be in this final as much as anyone else... and we all deserve to be in the final... Just please pick up that phone and vote for me. Please...

Audience Member:  (Male voice) I love you Shayne!

Shayne:  ...I love you too, matey! (Laughter) Please vote for me. Please. Please dial that number.

Kate Thornton:  Okay, you heard him, he desperately wants to be at that final next Saturday and the voting lines are open right now. If you want Shayne here make sure you give him a call... (Kate gives out hte voting numbers etc) ...It's been a very tough 24 hours for you Shayne...

Shayne:  It has been, yeah.

Kate Thornton:  ...but I think you'll agree, you more than got away with it tonight.

Shayne:  Thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Feeling good?

Shayne:  I am feeling really good now, thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Good, good, good. Okay, ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Shayne! (Shayne gets a kiss on the cheek from Kate and walks off stage, waving to the audience)
