Song 2

Brenda Edwards gets a great reaction from both the live audience and the panel after her first song of tonight's X Factor semi-final.
"Heyyyy!" screams Brenda, who it seems is in the 'diva-zone' even before she launches into her version of Aretha's "Respect".
On stage tonight Brenda is powerful in purple, diva-sassy, full of life and sounding fantastic. She is ably backed by a tight little Tamla-esque trio and she darts around that X Factor stage like she owns it.

In a comic moment Brenda steps down off the stage and parades along the front row of the audience.

Suddenly she grabs the shirt of one unsuspecting young gent and pulls him to her, then, quick as a flash, she discards him and sends him reeling back towards his seat.

The shocked expression on the young man's face is priceless!

Brenda Edwards displays a bit of diva attitude during her performance of Aretha's "Respect" on The X Factor semi-final stage.
If the chap in the audience doesn't know what hit him then he's in good company, because neither do we! Brenda is like a whirlwind on stage and she cooks up a storm. She really socks it to everybody and we have a sneaking feeling that her version of Aretha's Respect would earn Aretha's respect!

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:  (Introduction) All right. The beautiful Brenda.

Intro clip...

Brenda:  All my life I have dreamt of being a star... This week I have got a bit more of a taste what a star's life could be. It is everything that I ever dreamed of and more.

Sharon Osbourne:  When you see Brenda now, I mean, she is a star.

Brenda:  I literally did look at myself and think "God, is that me? I can't believe that's me". I'm living it, I'm breathing it... I'm just loving it. Have I said that already? I'm loving it! (Laughs)

Sharon Osbourne:  Although physically she's changed the most, inside she's still the same down to earth woman that we all fell in love with at that first audition. How great would it be for her to make the final?

Brenda:  If I was lucky enough to have the public vote for me again tonight and put me into the final, I tell you it will be a final you have never seen in your life, because I will be pulling out all the stops.

Brenda sings...

Kate Thornton:  Okay Louis, your comments please?

Louis Walsh:  Brenda! That was fantastic! You're a great singer... you're a great performer. I've got a lot of respect for you Brenda and I think you should make the final. (Cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you Louis. Simon?

Simon Cowell:  Ah! You know what, I love people who try to win and you are doing your best to win. I respect you for that. It was a great performance. We haven't seen a singer like you in this country for a long, long time and dare I say it, this performance and your overall performances throughout the competition... it is as good as I've seen in America, and that's a big compliment. (Cheers. Brenda looks thrilled)

Kate Thornton:  Thanks Simon. Sharon? You're mentoring Brenda, what would you like to add?

Sharon Osbourne:  Oh Brenda, you take my breath away. What can you say? You're just (makes finger-quotes) "fabulous".

Kate Thornton:  Well thank you very much judges. So do you agree? Do you want to see Brenda at next week's final? (Kate gives out the voting numbers etc) Brenda we'll see you again later. (Brenda kisses Kate on the cheek) But for now, oooh! Let's hear it for her...(Brenda waves to the audience as she walks off stage) Oooh! She's bringing down the house here.

Song 2: Without You  Check out 'Without You' at Amazon.co.uk (Harry Nilsson  Check out 'Harry Nilsson' at Amazon.co.uk, also Mariah Carey  Check out 'Mariah Carey' at Amazon.co.uk)
Song 1

Nilsson's "Without You" is a difficult number to sing, but Brenda carries it off during tonight's semi-final.
Brenda's second semi-final offering is truly a popular music classic and anyone who has tried singing Harry Nilsson's "Without You" in the bath or the shower will appreciate how it shifts through many registers... although, of course, their family may not!

As Simon Cowell notes, this is a notoriously difficult number to master but Brenda makes a great job of it. Simon also remarks that Brenda had a few tuning problems during parts of the song. We think he's referring to the fleeting moments when Brenda's voice cracked a little. This was possibly due to her over-raunching it slightly during her earlier rendition of "Respect", however it does little to detract from a superb overall performance.

To make this song work you need not only to sing it well, but you also need to deliver the emotions behind the words, and Brenda totally achieves this. Crackly bits aside, her vocal tone is superb on this song and when she goes for the big note we get goose-bumps on our goose-bumps!

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:  (Introduction) Ah, we have the fabulous Brenda!

Brenda sings...

Kate Thornton:  Okay Louis, let's start with you. Your comments please?

Louis Walsh:  Oh, Brenda, you just get... you are gettng better and better as the weeks go by and that song absolutely suits you and England... (turns to Simon) we need a diva in England, Simon. I know we have you, but we need a... (Simon laughs) ...we do need another diva and you're absolutely amazing. And I hope you make the final. (Cheers)

Kate Thornton: : Okay Louis, thank you very much. Simon?

Simon Cowell:  I'm getting worried because Louis, you've asked every artist to be in the final other than your own. (Some laughter) Something you want to tell us? (Back to the critique) It was great. I mean it was again a very... again a very heartfelt, emotional performance. It is an incredibly difficult song to sing. There are a few tuning part problems in the middle. Who cares? The end part was spectacular.

Brenda:  Thank you. (Cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Okay, Thank you Simon. Sharon, you're mentoring Brenda, what would you like to add?

Sharon Osbourne:  I have still got goose bumps on the back of my neck, Brenda. I just... you know what I just actually wanna take this opportunity to just say (Turns to Simon) "Simon, please, I'm begging of you let 4 be in the final"?

Simon Cowell:  You can't.

Sharon Osbourne:  Why? Please.

Simon Cowell:  You can't.

Sharon Osbourne:  You can change the rules. You can do anything. (Laughter) Please!

Simon Cowell:  No.

Sharon Osbourne:  Why?

Simon Cowell:  Can't.

Sharon Osbourne:  Please... how can anyone make... How can anyone make a choice?

Simon Cowell:  Sharon. It could be one of my own artists. That's the rules of the competition. Someone's got to go tonight. I feel the same way. I don't know who's gonna go tonight.

Louis Walsh:  Sharon, you've got two acts. You know, we've only got one each.

Simon Cowell:  That's true.

Sharon Osbourne:  Well, I am the best!

Louis Walsh:  It's true...It's true.

Simon Cowell:  (Laughing) Louis' got a point actually.

Sharon Osbourne:  I'm closing my mouth then. (Resumes critique) Brenda (I'm) just... speechless, it was amazing, thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Wow. Thank you very much judges... (Cheers) Yet again Brenda, nothing but compliments from the desk. What would you like to say back to the judges?

Brenda:  Ehm, you know... I...I've had ehm, really good responses from the judges for many weeks and I'm truly thankful for that but I really just wanna take this time to say thank you to to all the people at home that have been voting for me throughout the series. I really, really appreciate your votes add I know last week I said that this woman wants to be in the final. That hasn't changed. She still really wants to be in the final, so please pick up your phone and vote for Brenda one more time. Thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Brenda, a very subdued you tonight. Are you really starting to feel the pressure at this point?

Brenda:  You know, it's really nervous back stage and everybody wants it really bad, but you know I just want to get in... it's a dream of mine, and I've... I have been singing for a long time and I just want to sing for some more times.

Kate Thornton:  Okay, well Sharon wants four acts in next week's final but only three can go through. So do you want Brenda there? If you do, give her your vote (Kate gives out the voting numbers etc)

Brenda:  (To camera) Three... Three! Text 'Vote Brenda'.

Kate Thornton:  The lines are open right now. Let's hear it for her... Ooh, that's a battle cry! It's Brenda! (Brenda kisses Kate and exits the stage, waving)
