The Conway Sisters - X Factor Final 8 Show

The Conway Sisters
Song: Hold On  Check out 'Hold On' at Amazon.co.uk (Wilson Phillips  Check out 'Wilson Phillips' at Amazon.co.uk)

Marie and Sinéad look as though they are enjoying being up on stage tonight during The Conway Sisters Final 8 performance.
Before they performed last week The Conway Sisters made clear that they were gutted about the comments received from 'mentor' Simon the week before. It didn't change anything, because Simon was less than complimentary after they sang 'One Voice'. The girls felt more than gutted, Laura felt 'betrayed', Sharon felt 'kicked in the stomach" and Marie can't work out why Simon is criticising his group.
Laura Conway plays the piano as she harmonises with her Conway sisters on tonight's X Factor final 8 show.

It seems that the mentoring relationship between Simon and the sisters is in tatters. This week the girls have taken charge of their own destiny and chosen their own song.

Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" is a better choice for the girls, it suits their vocals and they make a good job of it. They've also mixed things up a bit, with Laura on grand piano and her 3 big sisters singing alongside her.

Laura seems in her element, and the girls look great up there. Our only gripe is that Sharon, Marie and Sinead stay rooted to their marks throughout their number. It would be good to see them interplay and move around a bit more.

The girls are looking nervous as they step up for their comments. Louis' words are positive, Sharon's not quite so. She begins by questioning Louis' assertion that the girls "have a lot more talent than a lot of the acts here tonight". She does compliment the girls on their great song choice, but doesn't actually say anything about how they performed it.

Sharon Conway sings "Hold On" alongside her sisters Marie, Sinéad and Laura (on piano).
When it's Simon's turn to speak the girls seem to tense-up even more. He makes it clear that he wasn't their mentor this week, so he can be impartial this week. The girls must be wondering what he was last week! Simon proceeds to defend his song choice last week, but then something remarkable happens... His voice softens and he tells them they made a good song choice, he tells them it was a good performance, a strong performance even! Involuntary smiles invade their faces, Irish spirits are lifted. Their mentor likes them. Now there's a surprise!

Panel-Bites:

Simon Cowell:  (Introduction) Okay, first up tonight, 4 very talented young ladies. The Conway Sisters.

Intro clip...

Laura:  Last week I was absolutely gutted. (Flashback to last week... Simon telling The Conway Sisters that they fell off key in the middle of their number) ... All we got was 'the song didn't suit ya' and 'we fell apart in the middle', which was not true. We really felt betrayed.

Sharon:  I felt I was kicked in the stomach on the stage that night and I couldn't even speak.

Marie:  Simon has picked us to be in his last 4 groups. Why is he criticising us every week when we don't feel that we've done anything wrong?

Simon Cowell:  I was definitely 'most hated person in the building' and I think I may have tipped them over the edge. But I don't want to lie to them.

Laura:  I just broke down into tears. All I wanted to do was go home.

Simon Cowell:  Toughen up! Prepare yourself. Focus, and get on with the job.

Laura:  We have chosen our song this week and this song is all about not letting people walk all over you and standing up for yourself.

Marie:  We're gonna fight. We're not going to leave this without a fight.

Sharon:  It's about the general public. Tonight it's not about Simon.

The Conway Sisters sing...

Kate Thornton:  Louis? Your comments please?

Louis Walsh:  Girls you know I'm a big fan, and you're so much better this week than you were last week. How you got through last week I really don't know... (Simon and Sharon laugh.) ...That was a really hard song to do tonight. A really hard song to do...

Sharon Osbourne:  Dig!

Louis Walsh:  No it was a dig at... (Simon)... And I love you for fighting back with Simon. Four good Irish girls. And you have a lot more talent than a lot of the acts here tonight, and I want you to fight. Absolutely, go girls. (Cheers. The Conway Sisters smile. Laura gives Louis a thumbs-up)

Kate Thornton:  Okay thanks Louis. Sharon?

Sharon Osbourne:  Hold on girls. Just a minute. (To Louis) "A lot more talent than a lot of the people up here tonight"?

Louis Walsh:  They have great, great vocals. They have great vocals.

Sharon Osbourne:  That's a bit strong! That's a bit strong!

Simon Cowell:  Like who?

Louis Walsh:  I'm not mentioning... but not in my category.

Sharon Osbourne:  Well you've only got two! (Laughter and audience cheers)

Louis Walsh:  It doesn't matter, they've got four voices!

Sharon Osbourne:  Yes... don't start! Ehm...

Louis Walsh:  Well Chico admitted... 'Chico' actually...

Sharon Osbourne:  Hey... 'King of Pop', do you mind?

Louis Walsh:  Okay.

Sharon Osbourne:  And remember what happened to the last king of pop. (High pitched) Uhh-uhhh!

Kate Thornton:  (Laughs) Sharon your comments on the performance please?

Sharon Osbourne:  (Waving her pen) Girls, girls, girls!

Simon Cowell:  Oh, I'm loving this.

Sharon Osbourne:  Uhm, the song... love the song, and strangely enough lyrically it was really appropriate for tonight's show. But I happen to love that song anyway and it was written for harmonies, so it was a perfect song choice for you.

Kate Thornton:  Thanks Sharon... Simon, you're mentoring The Conway Sisters. What would you like to say to the girls?

Simon Cowell:  Well I'm not this week am I Kate?

Kate Thornton:  It appears not. No.

Simon Cowell:  No, I'm not. But, however, so I can be an impartial judge tonight can't I? Let's just clear one thing up about last week's song. Last week's song was a good song. I didn't criticise the song. Okay? I would... I would have... I would have done that song again. Ahm, and I have to say girls you've gone up in my estimation, because you didn't... Well you stood up for yourselves this week and er... and that's a difficult thing to do on a show like this.

Louis Walsh:  It sure is.

Simon Cowell:  Well it is.

Louis Walsh:  It sure is.

Simon Cowell:  And er, I think probably...

Louis Walsh:  I know.

Simon Cowell:  Oh, shut up Louis... (Laughter) And I think probably you... you probably made the right decision tonight. I thought it was a good performance. It was a strong performance. Ahm, so yeah, good luck, it was good. (Laura and Sharon nod their thank yous).

Kate Thornton:  Girls, very briefly what would you like to say back to the judges?

Laura:  Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to perform a song that we were so happy with. And we really enjoyed ourself on the stage tonight.

Marie:  Yeah.

Laura:  Thank you so much. (Her sisters echo her thanks, audience cheers)

Kate Thornton:  Okay, well they enjoyed themselves tonight. Did you enjoy The Conway Sisters? (Kate gives out the voting numbers etc.) Let's hear it for them. They put up a fight tonight. It's The Conway Sisters! (The sisters wave to the audience and exit)
