Nicholas Dorsett performing 'I Want You Back' during tonight's Final 9 heat.
In his pre-performance video montage Nicholas admits to being a bit worried about tonight's song. The Jackson 5 had a hit with it way back in 1970, when lead vocalist Michael was just a cute little 11 year-old.
He says he hopes that he will 'nail it', but unfortunately the only thing he nails is the problem! The song neither suits his voice nor his performance style. He just seems out of place with this number. The performance isn't 'terrible' as Simon describes it, it's just not 'good'.

Sharon wants to know who chose the song . Nicholas makes clear (just as he did after his Final 12 performance) that he and Louis decided on the song together.

Nicholas Dorsett gets a disappointing reaction from the X Factor panel, but they don't wipe the smile off his face!

Simon tells Nicholas "Louis is killing you in this competition". Louis counters, reminding Simon that he works 'with' his artists and he strongly defends Nicholas' talent. Unfortunately Kate doesn't give him enough time to actually say what he thinks of the performance.

Last week Nicholas showed just a smidgen of attitude while having his say back to the judges. Tonight he takes the criticism on the chin and promises that he'll try and give a better performance next week. Hopefully, if Nicholas makes it through, he and Louis will make a better song choice too!

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  (Introduction) Okay, he's young, he's cool, it's Nicholas.

Intro clip...

Nicholas:  As far back as I can remember music has always been a part of my life. One Christmas my mum and dad got me a, like a karaoke machine. I was on that 24/7... basically just wore the thing out. That's when I realised this is what I'm destined to do.

Louis Walsh:  Nicholas is doing really well. He's getting better and better. I've given him a really tough song this week, and it's a hard song to perform, and er, he's got to work it to get it right.

Nicholas:  This week I'm singing "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5. I'm a little bit worried because Michael was a young boy when he sang this, but I'm ready to go for it and hopefully I'll nail it.

Louis Walsh:  I don't want to lose him.

Nicholas sings...

Kate Thornton:  Sharon, your comments please?

Sharon Osbourne:  Erm... Nicholas, I've never heard that song sang in a low register before. And, uhm, did you choose that song or did Louis?

Nicholas:  I did!

Sharon Osbourne:  You did?

Nicholas:  Yeah.

Louis Walsh:  Bo...both of us did actually. Yeah. (Some audience laughter)

Simon Cowell:  Of course.

Sharon Osbourne:  Oh?

Louis Walsh:  Both of us did.Ya.

Sharon Osbourne:  I... I don't think you did yourself justice by singing that song.... (Audience groans)

Nicholas:  (Nodding) Okay.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...I think your voice deserves better than that song.

Nicholas:  Okay.

Sharon Osbourne:  It just seemed very odd for me to hear that in such a low register.

Nicholas:  Okay.

Sharon Osbourne:  And you've got such a fantastic voice! You've got a really mature voice for a young man. An' I... I just don't think that you've nailed it yet with your song choices. I just haven't found that comfort zone with you yet...

Nicholas:  Okay.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...in any of the songs. But you've got it there and I... I know it's there. Do... do you know what I'm saying? To match the artist with a right song?

Nicholas:  (Licking his lips) Yeah. Umm.

Sharon Osbourne:  I just haven't seen it yet. (Turns to face Louis) An' I'm sure it's Louis' fault! (Audience laughter)

Louis Walsh:  No it's not! No it's not! (Cheers.)

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thanks Sharon. Simon?

Louis Walsh:  (Shaking his head) No it's not.

Sharon Osbourne:  (Waving her pen at Louis) Ohh, the buck stops with you Louis!

Simon Cowell:  I think Sharon was being very polite there Nicholas. I think 2 weeks ago you had a great, great night. Tonight it was terrible. (Groans, Nicholas's expression drops slightly) Honestly... It all sounds... It all sounds great in here.

Louis Walsh:  (Shaking his head) Simon! It wasn't terrible!

Simon Cowell:  Shut it Louis!

Louis Walsh:  (Shaking his head again) No, no!...

Simon Cowell:  It all sounds great in here.

Louis Walsh:  No, no, no!...

Simon Cowell:  (To Louis) You'll have your say. (To Nicholas) Louis chose a song intended for a 10 year old.

Nicholas:  Me and Louis chose.

Simon Cowell:  So, the fact that he gave...

Louis Walsh:  We... we...

Simon Cowell:  You, you're his mentor.

Louis Walsh:  ...I work 'with' my artists Simon.

Simon Cowell:  The fact that you gave it to him...

Sharon Osbourne:  On the phone!

Louis Walsh:  No, no, no!

Simon Cowell:  ...is ridiculous. And I'll tell you something Louis... Let me finish... And I'm... I'm saying this Nicholas because I like you and I think you've got great potential. Louis is killing you in this competition. (Groans)

Kate Thornton:  (Wanting to move on) Okay?

Simon Cowell:  He's killing you.

Kate Thornton:  Thank you Simon... going to have to move to Louis. Louis?

Louis Walsh:  Number one... Nicholas and I we pick our songs... we work together!... together... It ws a very brave song to sing...

Simon Cowell:  It was a stupid song to sing.

Louis Walsh:  ...you know, but I think this guy has the talent Simon.

Sharon Osbourne:  Silly, silly song.

Kate Thornton:  Thank you very much. Thank you very much judges.

Louis Walsh:  I think he's got the talent.

Kate Thornton:  Nicholas? Heard a lot from the judges there, what would you like to say back to them?

Nicholas:  Erm, well obviously 'thank you for your comments'. Erm, I'll just obviously try to take them on board next week. Come out here and hopefully impress you more. Because I wanted to impress you today, but obviously I didn't do that...

Simon Cowell:  No.

Nicholas:  So, next week I'll come out and try and do a better peformance.

Simon Cowell:  Good. (Big applause for Nicholas)

Kate Thornton:  (Approaches Nicholas) You okay?

Nicholas:  Fine.

Kate Thornton:  Have you enjoyed it?

Nicholas:  Yeah, I enjoyed all of it.

Kate Thornton:  (To the audience) Well, Nicholas enjoyed all of it, so if you did... (Kate gives out the voting numbers etc...) ...but for now, ladies and gentlemen, it's Nicholas!

Nicholas:  (Kisses Kate on the cheek and exits the stage.)
