Louis and Sharon are big Nicholas fans, but Simon Cowell calls his performance "lazy" and "predictable"
Not content with nailing Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On' last week, Nicholas takes on another of the great soul classics tonight, Rev. Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together'.
At this point we're wondering will the rest of Nicholas' songs in the competition begin with the word "Let's"? How about 'Let's Womble To The Party Tonight'? ...No. Let's forget that idea!
Let's get back to Nicholas. Nicholas' singing is great. really tuneful, he's soulful and he's chillin'... he has a problem though... he was fantastic last week and he's not quite up there tonight.

It's great the way he slips into the lyric "...since... Sharon... huh... since we've been together...".

We don't see Sharon, except in our heads, grinning from ear to ear.

Nicholas did the same when he sang this song in his original X Factor audition,  although on the main audition show they only featured his "End Of The Road" number.

Nicholas gets into his groove on stage, singing Al Greene's classic number "Let's stay together".
The reason we think Nicholas is just 'great' and not 'fantastic' this week is down to one little word, 'huh'.
A few 'huh's sprinkled sparingly across the performance can flavour it up nicely. A few too many and we forget to listen to the song, we're just waiting for the next 'huh'. At one point I imagined Nicholas sitting in the doctor's surgery this morning 'huh'-ing every 10 seconds and praying it would all be sorted before his performance!
Upon reflection, we agree with Simon's critique. Nicholas's performance seemed kind of lazy. Perhaps his talent comes so easy he's not used to making the effort? Simon's words are a warning that he can't afford to lose his focus in this contest.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  (Introduction) Okay, the last person in my category on stage tonight... He's young, he's cool, he's soulful... it's Nicholas!

Intro clip...

Louis Walsh:  Nicholas on Saturday night, he was absolutely great. I think it was the best performance on the night. He absolutely shone on stage and it was fantastic to watch.

Nicholas:  I was buzzing when I came off the stage. I just wanted to run back on and go again... and two minutes just wasn't enough like. It's just, every second of that 2 minutes I was enjoying. The comments from the judges were fantastic. I don't know if I could get any better. For years I've seen them on the TV and stuff, now I'm standing in front of them and they're giving me feedback, and the feedback that I'm gettin' is good feedback so... it's weird, just even though they know my name is weird like, but it's good man.

Louis Walsh:  I'm so glad I picked him and I'm so glad he's still in the competition. I think this guy can go a long, long way.

Nicholas:  I just hope the people stick behind me and keep backing me all the way. 'Cause at the end of the day I'm just riding the roller coaster and I don't want it to stop.

Nicholas sings...

Kate Thornton:  Simon, your comments please?

Simon Cowell:  Good. Good. I mean you're growing on me definitely Nicholas. You know I was a little bit surprised when Louis first chose you, but I think you've shown some of the most potential in this competition. Last week I thought it was sensational, this week a bit lazy, a bit predictable. Ahm, nothing to get too excited about really. I think you are somebody who needs to be tested every week to be honest with you and I don't think that song tested you particularly.

Nicholas:  Okay, thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you Simon. Sharon?

Sharon Osbourne:  I was just going to say "Move over Craig David", 'cause here is Nicholas. (Cheers, Nicholas grins broadly) And I have to say... agree with Simon in one thing... that I don't think we've seen your best yet. You're... you haven't got there. But you've got everything going for you, you've got such (an) amazing voice. Unbelievable potential, just.. "hang in there".

Nicholas:  All right, thank you.

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you Sharon. Louis you put Nicholas here. What would you like to say to him?

Louis Walsh:  Well, I mean he's a young kid. Last week he did Marvin Gaye, fantastic. This week you're doing Al Green. I don't know anybody else that could go up on this stage and sing these songs like as good as this guy. I think he's got everything. He's got a great image, he's got soul, he's young, he's talented. And I'm really proud of you Nicholas. (Cheers)

Nicholas:  Thank you, thank you very much.

Kate Thornton:  Thank you Louis. (To Nicholas) So, you heard the comments from the judges there?

Nicholas:  Yeah.

Kate Thornton:  Simon would like to... to hear you tested more...

Nicholas:  Yeah.

Kate Thornton:  What would you like to say to the judges Nicholas?

Nicholas:  Uhm, well he says I'm predictable, yeah, but erm, I think there's a difference between being predictable and coming out here and not being myself. That song I was comfortable performing it, erm, that's me at the end of the day. I don't want to come out here and be something I'm not, so... (Applause)

Simon Cowell:  (To Louis) Where are you coaching these kids to say. (Breaks into a laugh)

Kate Thornton:  But you were happy with your performance tonight Nicholas? Do you think you did a good job up here.

Nicholas:  Yeah, I think every time I come out here I'm looking to give a 100 per cent and I feel I did, I hope I did erm, Sharon said, ehm, she hasn't seen my best yet, but there's no point, I'm just doing my best already. I might as well just grow, and just hopefully if I stay in they'll see more.

Kate Thornton:  Well that's right. In order to grow you're going to have to stay in. You're going to have to pick up those votes so (Kate gives out the voting phone details etc...) ...For now, ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Nicholas!
