Phillip Magee doesn't get the best critique from Simon Cowell tonight, but Louis Walsh has a lot of faith in his talent.
Last week Phillip's rendition of "Amazed" didn't amaze Simon Cowell, who reported his emotional state as "distinctly unexcited". This week he'll be hoping that "Wind Beneath My Wings" gets him off to a flyer.
Our first impression is that the rugby shirt he's wearing would be fine for singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" but not for this ballad.
Phillip doesn't seem too comfortable with this number. For the most part his vocal stands up, but after the first couple of bars the arrangement seems to be "too much oomph" and "too little subtlety".
We disagree with Simon when he tells Phillip that most of the song was out of tune, but we would concede that unfortunately there were a few points in the song when he sounded a bit pub-singerish.

When Phillip gets his turn to speak it becomes clear that he hasn't been too happy with the song choice. Whether Louis is happy with him revealing this is probably another story!

The best part of the night for Phillip is definitely his chat with Kate. He shows less nerves than last week and speaks up for himself well, telling her that he'd like to liven things up a bit with a bit of "Rock and Roll".

Phillip Magee is undaunted by Simon's criticism, he would love to show the audience a bit of 'Rock and Roll' next week!
Phillip will be praying that the public ignore Simon's damning critique and vote to give him the chance to come back next week and show us what he is really capable of.

Panel-Bites:

Louis Walsh:  (Introduction) The next guy on the stage is really, really nervous. He really, really is. His name is Phillip, he's from Northern Ireland, so be nice.

Intro clip...

Phillip:  Singing live in, you know, The X Factor, it's something. It's the toughest thing I've ever, ever had to do. It really, really was.

Louis Walsh:  Phillip was the one person I was most worried about on Saturday 'cause he was so nervous. He just doesn't have the confidence in himself and I know he can do so much better in this competition. I just hope he gets through tonight okay.

Phillip:  I'm in a sort of a dream world at the minute and I don't want that dream to end. I don't want to be... wake up one morning and it's all gone. I've been given such a massive lifeline to follow in my dream. This is what I want to be... I want to be...I want to be a star, you know? Deep down I want to be a star and that's what it's all down to.

Phillip sings...

Kate Thornton:  Simon, your comments please?

Simon Cowell:  (Makes a face) Phillip, I don't want to be rude, but that was as flat as a pancake. (Audience groans) Sorry, most of that song was out of tune! (Phillip looks up to the ceiling) Now I don't know whether the problem lies... (An audience member's shouting distracts Simon for an instant) ...

Louis Walsh:  No Simon, the public disagree.

Simon Cowell:  With you, or whether it was the song I'm not sure, but it was... 'terrible'! (A moment of silence, before the audience boos) ...I mean seriously...

Louis Walsh:  No!

Simon Cowell:  Well don't boo me, I'm not the one who was singing. (Even Phillip laughs at that one!) ...ahm... it just wasn't very good. And I know everyone is nervous Louis. You know, the eleven acts are nervous. You know, but it's your...

Louis Walsh:  He is particularly nervous Simon.

Simon Cowell:  Oh, of course he is!

Louis Walsh:  You weren't in his dressing room but I was...

Simon Cowell:  Well I'd be nervous if you were in my dressing room! (Laughs)

Louis Walsh:  He'd been shaking... (Audience and Sharon laugh at Simon's quip) ... Well you know what? Simon the biggest problem in your dressing room is trying to get through all the make-up, and you've all these people pampering you. But this kid...

Simon Cowell:  Louis... Louis, Louis, Louis...

Louis Walsh:  ...you're giving him a hard time... to make a tv show.

Simon Cowell:  No, I'm not giving him a hard time. (To Phillip) I don't want to patronise you.

Louis Walsh:  You are.

Simon Cowell:  (To Phillip) I'm just going to be honest with you...

Louis Walsh:  You're rude!

Simon Cowell:  ...and er... you know... (Shakes his head at Louis) ...I'm not being rude...

Louis Walsh:  You are rude!

Simon Cowell:  People at home can listen Louis. You know, it was flat! ...Flat! ...Flat!

Kate Thornton:  Okay, thank you Simon. Sharon?

Sharon Osbourne:  Ehm, I don't know about 'flat' Phillip, but ehm, I think that the song was too big for you. I think that Louis, you really gave him such a hard song. (Simon is nodding vigorously) ...and you're...

Louis Walsh:  He just...

Simon Cowell:  You did.

Sharon Osbourne:  he's (Phillip is) a baby! And that is an adult song to sing.

Simon Cowell:  I agree.

Sharon Osbourne:  He's... he's a... he's a young man.

Simon Cowell:  I agree.

Sharon Osbourne:  That song was too big. (Applause) And you know... Phillip you know I really like you.

Simon Cowell:  He's a nice guy.

Sharon Osbourne:  ...I do. And you do have a lot of talent, but that song was way too big. (To Louis) You were hard on him!

Louis Walsh:  Well we picked... we picked...

Simon Cowell:  Yeah you were hard on him Louis.

Louis Walsh:  ...We actually picked the song together. We did a Lee Greenwood... the country version of it, and he likes the song and he knows the song and I think it suits his image and I'm very... I'm glad I gave you the chance Phillip.

Simon Cowell:  Louis, can I ask you one question? Honest to god?

Louis Walsh:  Yep.

Simon Cowell:  If he was my artist, what would you be saying right now?

Louis Walsh:  I think he has the likeability factor Simon, I really do.

Simon Cowell:  Ah, you're skirting the issue.

Louis Walsh:  And I'm glad I gave him a chance.

Simon Cowell:  You're skirting the issue. You're not answering it. (Some applause)

Louis Walsh:  No... Simon's fan club are in. (Laughs) Phillip, you did your best, and that's all you can do in this competition. And this is all about developing talent, and you know, you don't have the confidence that the other people have... but I know...

Simon Cowell:  (Exasperated tone) Ohh, Louis...

Louis Walsh:  ...you could be great.

Simon Cowell:  ...Louis, Louis, Louis, Louis! You talk such rubbish, you really do.

Kate Thornton:  Okay...

Louis Walsh:  You've had a whole career doing it!

Kate Thornton:  Thank you very much judges. Thank you. (Turns to Phillip) Phillip?

Phillip:  (Clears his throat)

Kate Thornton:  A very mixed bag of comments there.

Phillip: Yep.

Kate Thornton:  What would you like to say back to Simon?

Phillip:  No, I appreciate all your... you know comments, you know I really do.... you know, it's you know... it's important to me. But er, there is a lot of songs out there... yus haven't seen anything yet. I'm just looking for... (Big cheers) ...Do you know... (Audience still cheering) ...if I had the chance I'd love to do a bit of... (Shakes his shoulder) ...Rock and Roll you know. (Cheers) I'm not really a ballady singer to tell you the truth. I just, you know, I just hope that I get a chance and yous give me the chance to show what I can do.

Sharon Osbourne:  (Shouts over) Phillip, who chose that song. Was... Louis speaking the truth?

Phillip:  I... I didn't... I didn't particularly choose that... I was.... it was...

Sharon Osbourne:  (Rises from her seat and glares at Louis in slam-dunk ecstasy) Yes! (Louis smiles)

Phillip:  But I love the song and I thought yeah, I want to give it... give it a go. And I did give it a go, and.... you know.

Simon Cowell:  You should say to Louis, "with the greatest respect, you don't know what you're talkling about"

Sharon Osbourne:  Next week say 'No'!

Phillip:  No, there's nothing wrong with the...

Kate Thornton:  Okay well...

Phillip:  ...it's a great song!

Kate Thornton:  Well, maybe next week Phillip, if you pick up the votes you need...

Phillip:  Yea.

Kate Thornton:  You can come back and do some rock and roll for us. So, if you want to vote for Phillip and give him a chance to do that (Gives out phone numbers etc) ... Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Phillip. (Phillip kisses Kate on the cheek and exits the stage)
