Day 2 (The Groups Boot Camp with Simon Cowell)

Venue: Bayham Hall - Kent

After the first day of Group Boot Camp mentor Simon Cowell announces to his remaining 14 acts that the "drinks are on me".
There are whoops of delight from the stressed out candidates who must be dying to relax and unwind. We are treated to a few glimpses of the ensuing revelry, 4Tune downing a few shots, The Chapman Brother's necking their pints, high spirits are raised even higher for a clink of cheers.
The remaining contestants are in high spirits at the end of the first day of Simon Cowell's Boot Camp.

Amazingly there are no reports of any booze bingeing and everyone makes it up before 6am when Dave and Sinitta reveal Simon's plan for the day. The Groups are told they have to learn a song in just one hour. Everyone seems enthusiastic and gets straight at it. Simon arrives an hour later expecting to be impressed, "no excuses today" he tells them "you've got good songs".

First up are Sligo girls The Conway Sisters, with Desperado. Their harmonies are sounding good until lead singer Marie loses her way. She tries to explain things to Simon, Sinitta and Dave...

"Once I get in... once I practice the song..." but, remembering that Simon wants no excuses, she stops mid-sentence.

The girls shuffle out disappointed in themselves. Simon is also disappointed and he tells his team "I think they are potentially great but this is what happens when you put people under pressure."

Outside, Laura the blonde Conway, tells Kate "yesterday I had a bit of hope in me, today I don't."

Laura Conway tells Kate Thornton that she's lost that little bit of hope in her.

Next in are the male vocal duo that appropriately call themselves "Two". They're sounding good apart from a slightly dodgy last bar.

"There's something sort of charming about these guys" says Simon once they leave the room.

The "Two" guys tell Kate they are happy with how they sang and they're keeping their fingers crossed.

The Chapman Brothers' sing Every Breath You Take. Once again they seem a little nervous but their vocals are good. Afterwards they tell Kate that they're happy with the reactions from the mentors who they think "...all looked optimistic".

Simon is certainly impressed by the twins' commitment, "they really, really, really, really want this" he tells Sinitta.

Brothers Andy and Carl Pemberton from Journey South struck lucky with the song they had to learn. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is the same song they sang for their original audition!

However, Andy is still nervous before singing for Simon & co, "you just start getting butterflies inside and it's a strange feeling. You start forgetting things".

Happily the guys don't forget a thing. They sing with a fierce passion and after they leave the room vocal coach Dave speaks of "a moment of magic". Simon agrees, but cautions that they may have been singing in clubs too long to become credible recording artists.

Journey South perform 'a bit of magic' for Simon, Dave and Sinitta.

Addictiv Ladies were overjoyed when they made it to the second day of Boot Camp. Today the Walthamstow girls are singing All Saints' 'Never Ever'.

  • Sinitta calls them adorable.
  • Dave Laudat describes their set as "kind of all over the place, but I found myself smiling".
  • Simon says he likes the fact "that it's not right but it is right"!

The girls may not be doing everything right just yet, but it sounds like they're definitely doing something right!

Simon, Sinitta and Dave get the thumbs-up from Addictiv Ladies' Stephanie Yamson!

Despite making it to day 2 Eskimo Blonde still aren't feeling confident about their standing in the contest.

Hari tries to think positive, "if we'd have been complimented yesterday we would have been complacent today, but we're not, we're really nervous, but in a good way."

They do okay with Britney's Baby One More Time, although some of the harmonies are a bit rough.

Jemma Moon, Hari Blanch and Gemma Davies try to stay positive before their day 2 performance.

Of the three girls it is Hari who consistently stands out, both vocally and performance-wise. Simon's comment after the girls have left the room sums things up, "it's still a mess, but I really, really, really like this girl... in the middle (Hari)"

Next up it's 'Battle of the Boy Bands - Part II'.

4Tune and 4th Ba5e both rate themselves above their competition...

Blair, the leader and founder of 4th Ba5e is talking the talk, "They don't want to see pretty boys any more. It's like 'do you want a bunch of dolphins or do you want a bunch of dobermans?"

Mark from The Brother's isn't even thinking about the other two bands, he declares that "the biggest competition is ourselves".
4Tune sing a great arrangement of Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone, although their facial expressions still seem a little too serious. Mike says the group are happier today because they know they've given their best.
The Brothers also make a good job of Every Breath You Take by The Police and afterwards seem confident that they have a good chance of making it through. The Brothers sing Every Breath You Take on day 2 of Simon Cowell's X Factor Boot Camp.

4th Ba5e attempt a complex arrangement of the N'synch number I Want You Back, but unfortunately things start going awry during Dan's vocal.

Blair stops the band and asks if they can start again, when they do they run straight into another problem with the lyrics, this time on Mark's vocal.

Simon reminds the guys that on a live show if you forget the words "you can't say 'start again'". Afterwards Blair articulates the mood of the group "That's it. Game over! It's unlikely he's gonna put 3 boy bands through".

It's not too long before 4th Ba5e and the rest of the acts learn their fate. Simon of course has a few linguistic tricks up his sleeve as he delivers his verdicts!

Simon's words to 'Two' are... "Good singers... I think the girls would love you..."
He smiles and the 'Two' boys hopes must be soaring, but here it comes... "I have made a decision guys you haven't made the final 7"!

It seems that verdict-speak is all back to front. So 4Tune must be really worried when Simon tells them... "You've done great. You know that.. and I've made a decision...."
Now that sounds like really bad news! Fortunately Simon is playing it straight this time, he continues... "You're in the top 7 guys!"

Simon saves his pièce de résistance for 4th Ba5e. The boys are positive they're out, so his double-negative works a treat when he tells them... "Guys... we are not going to ask you to leave the competition." Blair nearly collapses in a heap, and later the guys look a picture as they sit on the staircase shedding tears of joy.Tears of joy for 4th BASE. Simon Cowell is not going to ask them to leave the competition.
Simon's final seven Groups are...
  • 4th Ba5e
  • 4Tune
  • Addictiv Ladies
  • Eskimo Blonde
  • Journey South
  • The Brothers
  • The Conway Sisters
