| Day 1 (16-24s Boot Camp with Louis Walsh) |
| Louis gets a few whoops from the 16 to 24 year olds when he takes to the stage at North Finchley's artsdepot. Young mum Michelle Foster looks concerned, knowing that Louis rated her second chance audition as still not 'improved enough'. |
| Louis' mentoring team includes stylist Faye Sawyer who helped him out with the groups last year, and vocal coach Yvonne Burnett who replaces Dave Laudat (now working with Simon). Opera singer Yvonne (often referred to as 'Yvie' ) is based in Bedford but is originally from Aberdeen. |
Louis has asked his 80+ youthful boot campers to choose and learn one song from a list of five... |
(All song and artist links are to Amazon.co.uk) -
Unchained Melody (The Righteous Brothers ) -
From This Moment On (Shania Twain ) -
To Love Somebody (The Bee Gees ) -
Beautiful (Christina Aguilera ) -
Careless Whisper (George Michael ) |
To save time he gets them to come up on stage in lines of 10 to sing their choices. Most of the singers that we remember from the audition stage seem to be coping well with the stress of the event. Shayne Ward nails Unchained Melody, Alexandra Burke belts out a powerful version of From This Moment On and young James Bellamy sings Careless Whisper anything but carelessly! |
| The Bee Gees' hit To Love Somebody turns out to be a good choice for teenagers Trevor Hodgson, Nicholas Dorsett and 21-year-old Philip McGee. | |
 | There are some mess-ups on this song though, the most memorable being from Welsh lad Richard Peachey who jumbles the opening lyrics and then stops in his tracks, telling Louis "I've totally lost it". |
| Chenai Zinyuku and Daniel Riesner both deliver fine performances to tug at the heart strings. |
Returnee Chenai had a stormy time at last year's Boot Camp when she was told to go home, then asked to come back only to be sent home a second time! She admits to finding the whole thing "frightening", but she holds things together and her vocal for Unchained Melody is impressive. She's not confident afterwards though and tells Kate Thornton that she doesn't expect to be called back for day 2 of Boot Camp. | |
 | Daniel who has cerebral palsy, continues to defy those who in the past have written off his chances of success as a performer because of his condition. He gives an impassioned rendition of Christina Aguilera's Beautiful the lyrics of which he says are "very close to home". |
| At the end of day 1 Louis calls the boot campers up onto the stage in groups of 5 to tell them if they are in his top 21 that will make it through to the next day. |
| Amongst the unlucky ones to be sent home are 2 familiar faces, Aaron and Steph. |
| Amongst those chosen for Louis' final 21 are... |
- Alexandra Burke
- Becky Fairclough (who had to leave her girl band Stiletto to go further in the competition)
- Chenai Zinyuku
- Daniel Bywater (the crooning David Beckham lookalike)
- Daniel Riesner
- James Bellamy
- Michelle Foster (the Season 1 returnee who Louis told wasn't good enough in this year's audition)
- Nicholas Dorsett
- Philip McGee
- Richard Peachey
- Shayne Ward
- Trevor Hodgson
|
The best reaction came from Daniel Riesner and Shayne Ward who bounced with joy down the artsdepot corridor after hearing the good news from Louis. |
| Richard Peachey is perhaps the biggest surprise inclusion, especially to himself! "I know I'm out" was his reaction after his problem with the Bee Gee's lyric. Upon hearing the news a relieved and overjoyed Richard led the charge to the mentor's table to shake Louis' hand. He's got a second bite of the cherry, but must surely do better on day 2 if he is to make it into Louis' final 7. |
