Adam and Steph seem mismatched as a couple... only musically speaking mind!
When students Adam and Steph face the panel for their audition the first thing Simon Cowell wants to know is whether they are a couple. They aren't, in fact Adam and Steph have only got to know each other over the last couple of days. Adam's original singing partner dropped out at the last minute so he asked Steph to step in as a replacement.
Steph explains that they only have Psychology together, but Simon seems certain they have chemistry together too. He tries to strengthen their bonds by telling Steph "he likes you". This of course results in both auditionees laughing with unnatural loudness to cover their embarrassment.
If this was the seX factor, Adam and Steph would be in beautiful camp already, but it's The X Factor and they have to sing...
Steph starts off singing solo. She immediately impresses with perfect pitch and plenty of power. Everything looks rosy until Adam steps in with a vocal as flat as Tuesday's pancake.
Simon isn't exaggerating when he tells Adam he's murdered the song, nor when he tells Stephanie that she's not bad.

Perhaps the most amusingly awkward moment of the audition is when Simon asks Steph what she would say if she were judging Adam. Steph cringes and dithers before answering, but eventually says if she were "brutally honest" she would probably say 'No'.

The panel agree and ironically, considering that Steph didn't originally apply for the show, she gets the panel's 'Yes' for Boot Camp as a solo act without Adam.

Adam's happiness for Steph outweighs his own disappointment. "All right! Nice going!" he tells Steph enthusiastically.
With the business bit out of the way Simon switches back to matchmaker mode. "It means you can date now" he tells them. They laugh again, then huddle together a little and very nearly hug. Perhaps Simon's persuasion is working!
"You do like her, I can tell!" shouts Simon to Adam as he leaves with his pretty Uni pal and successful auditionee Steph.

Simon grins cheekily as he watches them both leave the room and shouts to Adam "You do like her, I can tell". Steph throws her head back for yet another embarrassed laugh, Adam turns to the panel with a smile and wave, which perhaps might translate to "is the pope a catholic?"

Unfortunately, the cameras don't follow Adam and Steph around all day, so we still aren't sure quite how much this lovely couple liked each other. Maybe we'll learn more when we catch up with Steph at Boot Camp!

Panel-Bites:

Sharon Osbourne:  How long have you been singing together?

Adam:  (Smiling) Er, not actually all that long. (Laughs)

Steph:  Er... 'bout a week and a bit.

Sharon Osbourne:  (High pitched surprise) A week and a bit?

Adam:  Yeah.

Steph:  Adam entered with one of his friends, an' er... his friend pulled out last minute erm... so he said...

Adam:  Like, 2 days before.

Steph:  Do I want to come along and do it... so... (Smiles)

Simon Cowell:  Are you boyfriend-girlfriend?

Adam:  (Grins) Er, naa.

Steph:  No, we actually only have Psychology together. We've only ever spoken to each other said like "Hi!"

Sharon Osbourne:  Oh, so you're students?

Steph:  Yer.

Sharon Osbourne:  Okay.

Simon Cowell:  Stephanie!

Steph:  Yes.

Simon Cowell:  He likes you!

Embarrassed laughter from Adam and Steph!

Simon Cowell:  I can tell! ... Am I right Adam?

Adam doesn't seem to know where to look.

Steph:  (Laughing) Ohh! Bless him.

Louis is also laughing.

Sharon Osbourne:  All right. (Points to Louis and Simon) Guys... behave!

Simon Cowell:  Okay. Off you go.

Adam and Steph sing...

Simon Cowell:  All right. All right. Talk about murdering a good song! I mean it was all going well and then you tu... you (Adam) came along. (Adam smiles and looks at the floor) ... You're not bad Stephanie!

Steph:  Ah!

Sharon Osbourne:  (Points at Steph, laughing as she speaks) You should stay and come back tomorrow. You (Adam) should go home.

Simon Cowell:  Yeah. I mean Adam, seriously, it's not happening for you.

Adam:  (Laughing) Yes, fair enough.

Simon Cowell:  Stephanie, what do you think of Adam?

Steph:  Well, if you were to put him by himself...(Pauses)...

Simon Cowell:  What?

Steph:  No! (Waves her arms everywhere) This is horrible!

Sharon Osbourne:  (Laughs)

Simon Cowell:  (Smiling) Well I'm just... I'm just wondering!

Adam:  (Still grinning) Really mean question!

Simon Cowell:  If he was on his own what would you say?

Steph:  Me, personally?

Simon Cowell:  Yeah.

Steph:  Brutally honest?

Simon Cowell:  Brutally honest.

Steph:  Ohhhh!

Adam:  (To Steph) Don't worry.

Steph:  (Squirming as she speaks) I'd probably say 'No'.

Adam:  That's all right.

Simon Cowell:  What did you think Louis?

Louis Walsh:  Well, are we going to judge Stephanie?... Yes or no?

Simon Cowell:  Yes, let's judge Stephanie!

Louis Walsh:  Yes or no?

Simon Cowell:  Yes.

Sharon Osbourne:  Yes.

Louis Walsh:  Yes.

Adam:  All right! Nice going!

Sharon Osbourne:  Nice guy!

Simon Cowell:  It means you can date now. (They laugh)

Adam and Steph huddle for a moment in what nearly becomes a hug.

Sharon Osbourne:  You can be her manager!

Simon Cowell:  Anyway, Adam 'No', Stephanie 'Yes'. Nice to meet you both.

Steph:  Thanks very much!

Adam:  (Double thumbs up) Thanks very much!

Simon Cowell:  Take care.

Adam:  See you later.

Steph:  Thank you.

Sharon Osbourne:  Bye guys.

Simon Cowell:  (As they are leaving) You do like her, I can tell.

Steph:  (Throws her head back laughing)

Sharon Osbourne:  Definitely!

Adam:  (Turns at the door and waves, Sharon and Simon both laugh aloud)
