The songsheet for tonight's X Factor final is shown below. Click on the contestant links to find out what the panel had to say about them and their performances. (The song and original artist links will lead you to relevant pages on Amazon.co.uk) |
During a controversial X Factor final Sharon Osbourne lambasts Steve Brookstein and calls him 'fake'. Simon Cowell disagrees, "I've known this guy for 8 weeks. I won't put up with anyone who's a fake. He's a genuinely nice guy, I think he deserves his place here." The majority of the public agree with Simon because when Kate Thornton (eventually) lets out the name of the winning act it is 'Steve'. He has received the lion's share of a vote tally of over 8 million. | |
Simon embraces Steve upon hearing the result and the 2 victors sportingly exchange hugs and handshakes with gallant runners up G4, who have definitely given them a run for their money.
The audience applause is continuous and so deafening that Kate Thornton needs to shout into her mike to be heard above it all.
"How are you feeling?" she asks Steve.
"Shocked, shocked... I'm always surprised!...This ain't happening. This is not happening! I do not believe it..." he says, sounding stupefied but happy!
Kate acknowledges G4 and their mentor Louis Walsh. Although the G4 guys must be a little disappointed they seem genuinely happy and proud to have taken their X Factor journey right to the wire. As it transpires Louis Walsh will remain G4's manager and a recording career is still on the cards for them.
The winner's performance of "Against All Odds" is punctuated by lots of laughter and joyful asides of thanks to his supporters, both in the audience and out there in TV land.
Tickertape is everywhere as Steve sings the final bars of the song that will soon become his first record. In a lovely moment he greets his backing choir with wide open arms. They are all so delighted for him that they practically mob him with happiness. Lloyd Wade is one of the many smiling choristers giving him a well deserved pat on the shoulders.
Steve rejoins Kate and Simon, and pays tribute to his mentor "If he hadn't put me through, I wouldn't be standing here right now!".
"I am just so thrilled for this guy!" says Simon, "It's what this competition was all about." After thanking the producers, Annie Skates and Sinitta (his angels!) and not forgetting the ITV executives who allowed the show to air, Simon tells his protégé "...above all, thank you for being a fantastic winner!"
Steve has a final word of gratitude for his supporters...
"The little thing they do, just picking up the phone and voting for me, has changed my life beyond belief!"
It's been a great thrill for us to watch that change take place and observe the personal growth that all the finalists have experienced during their X Factor journey.
We at The X Factor Watch would echo Simon's words. We believe Steve is a very worthy winner of the contest and we look forward to the release of his first single and album.
Steve's new single is a cover of Phil Collin's "Against All Odds" and will be released on Monday Dec 20th 2004.
Oh, and we mustn't forget....Congratulations Steve!
