Steve Brookstein - The X Factor Final

Exactly what was said between Steve, Kate and the Judges during The X Factor final?

  1. Higher and Higher (Jackie Wilson)
  2. Smile (Charlie Chaplin)
  3. Against All Odds (Phil Collins)
Steve Brookstein looks like he's enjoying himself during The X Factor final show. In case you can't tell by his face, he's singing Charlie Chaplin's classic composition 'Smile'.
Higher and Higher
Steve chats with Kate Thornton after singing 'Higher and Higher' (Jackie Wilson)

Kate: Hey! Well look here at the choir! Fantastic! (Steve acknowledges the choir) Now Steve, quite an opening to the show. That was your first bid to become the winner of The X Factor. How do you think it went?

Steve: Ohh... I just love the song, just... I just wanted...(shouts from audience) ...that was great. I just enjoyed singing that song. 'Get it out there' and just having fun on stage and er....(smiles broadly)...just have some fun! It was brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Kate: Now you don't need me to tell you that everything rides on tonight. You've got one performance down with two to go. The nerves settling now?

Steve: Er, at this precise moment yeah, but I know as soon as I walk off I'm gonna be back (to) 'oh I've got to do another song'. So it's gonna be... it's gonna be fun. I dunno, we'll see how it goes.

Kate: Now you've been on the stage for seven weeks now singing, week in week out. But how does tonight compare Steve?

Steve: This... there's an atmosphere in the house tonight (cheers) a real...(more cheers)

Kate: Well let's hope that'll carry you through your next two songs. (Steve nods) For now, let's hear it for Steve!

Smile
Steve receives his first panel verdict of the night after singing 'Smile' (Charlie Chaplin).
During The X Factor final show Smiler Steve Brookstein does another great job of the Charlie Chaplin composition 'Smile'.

Kate: Okay, Steve, it's time for the judges' verdict. Louis!

Louis: Hello Kate.

Kate: Hi.

Louis: I... I enjoyed both performances tonight. I thought he was really, really good. I preferred the first song. The Jackie Wilson song 'Higher and Higher'. I thought you did a really good job (sic). And I like 'Smile' even though it is on the new Westlife album. I thought it was very good. (Some groans from the audience)

Kate: So, all in all Louis, so far...'well done'.

Louis: Yeah, I thought it was really good. Very pleasant, very nice.

Kate: Thank you very much. Sharon?

Sharon: Yeah, uhm... love... you know I love 'Smile'. That's for me the best song that you sing but it's hard for me to put it in words, so I'm going to use one of your quotes Steve. The quote that you used to describe your girlfriend. 'You to me are like a Volvo, reliable' (Sharon stares at Steve with a fixed smile - there is a mixture of titters and groans from the audience)

Kate: Did you really say that to Eileen?

Steve: Erm, my... Do you know what? That's really... uhh I dunno. Do you know...I... my girlfriend's here (we see a shot of Eilieen smiling supportively) ... I love her dearly (cheers and claps) ...she's like... I love her... and we do... where is she? Where is Eileen? (Eileen raises her hand in a wave)

Kate: She's in the audience.

Steve: She... do you know what she... we have a love, me and her we... I don't need to explain my relationship. It's perfect.

Kate: Okay. So... so did you like it Sharon?

Sharon: Of course I did. How can you not like Steve?

( Steve blows a kiss and says 'I love you', returning sweet sarcasm to Sharon? )

Sharon: He's gorgeous...(muffled) ...(mock excitement) whooo!

Kate: So your peers have been won over Simon. What did you make of tonight's performances so far?

Simon: I'm still thinking about that ridiculous comment.

Steve: (to Sharon) Mmmm, love you babe.

Kate: (to Steve) Don't worry, you'll never drive a Volvo!

Steve: They're good!

Kate: I know they are but...they're not a power car. Let's be honest! (Steve is laughing)

Simon: No, you see I just don't get it! Never mind. Erm.

Kate: What did you think of the performances tonight.

Simon: I thought both of the performances were superb, and er, you know, I...I...I...I think the thing about Steve is... (big cheers) y'know, I run a record label, so I have to look at this guy as 'could he compete in today's market?' And you know from the experience I've had, growing and getting confidence through this competition, no question or doubt. Y'know this guy, he deserves to be here. (cheers)

Kate: Well Steve, well done. You've one more song. We'll see you later. For now, let's say thank you to Simon and Steve.

Against All Odds
After singing 'Against All Odds' (Phil Collins) Steve faces The X Factor panel for his very last time...

Kate: Steve, good news! It's time for your final judges verdict. Last one ever Steve. Okay... last judges verdict ever! Louis...

Louis: I think Steve picked a really, really good song and it was a pretty good performance, but I do prefer the Westlife version. (groans)

Simon: Oh shut up Louis!

(Louis keeps a smile fixed on his face!)

Kate: Anything else you'd like to... say about the performance?

Louis: No, I really liked his first song tonight. Jackie Wilson... I thought that was your best moment. Smile was good, this was okay... y'know. That's all.

Kate: Sharon! What did you think of Steve's final performance?

Sharon: (shouts of 'brilliant!' and 'fabulous!' from the audience, Sharon laughs) Erm, no not fabulous. Listen everybody knows the way I feel about Steve. I've never been a Steve fan. Steve has a very nice voice. For me he's not a superstar. And I just have to say this... I am so fed up of Mr Humble and Mr (in mocking moaney voice) 'Should I sell my Volkswagen? Should I keep it?' (groans and boos) He's over-confident, he's been over-confident from day one! He is... he's not what he seems believe me! All that b.s. that he gives out every week. (boos) He's even fooled Simon! He's full of crap and he's an average singer.

Sharon Osbourne launches a vitriolic attack on Steve Brookstein in what seems like a last ditch effort to influence the public vote.

Kate: Okay...

Sharon: Ask everybody else on this contest.

Kate: Thank you...

Sharon: He's overly confident!

Kate: Thank you Sharon. Simon? (more groans and boos)

Simon: (spreads out his palm) You know Kate there is an awful lot I could say, but I won't. I won't. Uhm, I think it was inappropriate to be personal tonight. (applause)

Sharon: There's no personal Simon! Simon...

Simon: Let me finish.

Sharon: Simon you know he's gonna win... Simon you know he's gonna win

Simon: No, no, no...

Sharon: ... the both of you

Simon: Let me...let me...no Sharon....

Sharon: (muffled)... and good luck to him... but the public should know... he's a fake!

Simon: Sharon Shut up!

Sharon: He's a fake! (groans)

Simon: Just shut up!

Kate: Okay, thank you! We are running out of time...

Simon: Let me just say...something

Kate: Very quickly Simon, what you'd like to say? (sic)

Simon: Okay...We are very fortunate, we have careers. This means a lot to him, you should remember that.

Sharon: Don't start the victim! He's trying to (muffled) ...he's not a victim.

Simon: It's got nothing to do with being a victim okay! It's about his career.

Kate: Okay guys I'm going to ask for quiet, thank you very much. Steve, that was your last performance. Are you happy that you've done all you can tonight?

Steve: No...I kind of ...yeah... basically, I don't know what, that last song, I fluffed it a little bit 'cause  it... it is emotional and it's... this is my last... may be my last performance. So I just did...(shrugs disappointedly), did what I could.

Kate: Well Steve, you've done all you can for now. Let's hear it for Simon and Steve!
