Steve Brookstein - Let's Stay Together (Al Green)

Steve Brookstein is finding out what a celebrity's life is really like. During the week he turned up at Covent Garden to turn on the Christmas lights. And while he was there he also managed to turn on a good few of the women in the Covent Garden crowd!

With chants of 'Steve! Steve!' ringing in his ears the crooner says he "can't believe how things have changed in one year!"

On Thursday morning Steve paid a visit to the GMTV studios for an interview with Andrew Castle and Penny Smith on the early morning sofas. A little later that morning Steve had a second tv interview, this time with one of his favourite morning TV presenters "Lorraine Kelly" for her LK Today show.

Lorraine told Steve not to worry about Louis Walsh's remark on last week's show when Louis accused Steve of not being dressed-up for his performance. She felt the remark had a lot more to do with the inter-panel rivalry than his actual performance on the night.

Tonight on stage Steve is 'dressed-up', albeit in the smart, casual mode of designer jeans, dark jacket and T-shirt. He is looking extremely confident and relaxed on stage as he begins singing his Al Green number, "Let's Stay Together". He definitely holds the song together, and shows off his impressive vocal range by comfortably reaching up and grabbing some of those high notes that the Reverend Green usually keeps to himself!

Like the Reverend Green, Steve is every inch a soul man. He goes where the music takes him, and that is exactly where he wants to be.

A place where he may not want to be is facing the panel of Sharon and Louis. If past history is anything to go by he can expect a few slings and arrows fired in his direction. But things can change, can't they?

Kate: Well done! Okay Steve, time for the judges verdict. Mrs O! Your thoughts please?

Sharon: Erm, great song Steve, great song choice this week, really good. Very well done. (cheers - Steve smiles and looks as though he is waiting for the 'but'! ) Fabulous. Fabulous Steve. (Sharon claps daintily.)

Kate: Sharon, last week you thought that Steve was veering too much towards the ballads. A refreshing change with his performance tonight?

Sharon: Absolutely! Yes! (cheers)

Kate: There, you get a tick in the box from Sharon Osbourne. But what does Louis Walsh think?

Louis: Kate, you know when I heard he was going to do erm, this big song by Al Green I just didn't think he was gonna be able to pull it off... And it's been my favourite performance by you so far Steve in the whole entire series. (big cheers) Really, really good... But, but, but, but, but, but... (Louis is smiling and raising his hand for his turn to speak again. The applause from the audience is deafening and Steve's smile is broader than ever!)

Kate: Louis hasn't finished.

Louis: I'm worried. Kate, there's just one thing...(waves his finger) They're starting, they're starting to look very similar the two guys (Steve and Simon smile curiously at Louis.)

Sharon: Ver-y sim-il-ar!

Louis: Yeah, bit of a clone thing going on here.

Sharon: Yes. Yes, definitely.

Louis: (Steve has his arm around Simon's shoulder) And you know, one Simon Cowell is enough! We don't need another. One is enough Simon.

Kate: Okay, but all in all very good.

Louis: Very good performance, very good.

Kate: Thank you very much. (cheers)... Simon! Were you happy with Steve's efforts tonight?

Simon: (serious tone) I'm very happy with what Louis said, because Louis just paid you the highest compliment you've ever had. (Simon turns to Steve and has a smirk on his face) You look like me! (laughter) Thank you Louis!

Louis: Simon! It's not good luck!

Simon: (To Steve) Now listen, you know what. I think you know, listening to Steve tonight I remember when we first saw him come into the audition room. And, and...y'know once again you see where a competition like this means something. Because he's not just sounding good within the competition, he's sounding to me like as good as anyone who's selling a lot of records in this country at the moment. So, you know (cheers) this is...this is good.

Kate: Steve. You've been heaped with praise tonight. You've been working with this charactrer for five weeks now. What did he manage to teach you?

Steve: Erm, (takes a deep breath) it's...d'you know what...no seriously...it's been an absolute pleasure. Seriously! Because from day one I wasn't sure whether I was coming in or I was going to be going home and to get this far it's been amazing and I've got to big him up!...Because, I'll tell ya! (Steve beats on his heart with his fist)...It's been...(crowd cheers, Simon smiles broadly)...I swear to god! I know it's not....I don't like to....I don't like to big him up 'cause...

Kate: Well you just have!

Steve: ...he's done well!!!

Kate: Okay well, well done to both of you tonight. For now ladies and gentlemen it's Simon and Steve!
