Steve Brookstein - Help Me Make It Through The Night (Kris Kristofferson)

After last week's show Steve gets together with mentor Simon Cowell and his angels, Annie Skates and Sinitta.

Simon is off to L.A. the next day but he tells Steve he's had a change of mind about this week's song choice, "because I think Sharon said something last week and she was right. You're trying to copy existing soul singers...and I think what happened tonight is when you took a song which is not a soul song, you made it into a soul song. It sounded like your song tonight rather than a copy!"

It's a great observation.

It was Sharon who articulated this observation first after Steve's performance of Smile. She told Steve he sang it "As you! As Steve! As You! Not trying to be somebody else! Now we know who Steve is, he's here." It's a comment that could easily have been forgotten.

It's an example of just how astute Simon is. He latched onto it and analysed its true significance.

Help Me Make It Through The Night is their non-soul choice for Steve tonight and it looks like Simon's little theory could well be right. Steve gives the song his distinctive soul treatment and sings it like he owns it.

Steve Brookstein bares his 'soul' up on stage singing 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'.

Relations are rarely rosey between Steve and the panel though. So it's unlikely Steve is taking anything for granted! ...

Kate: Well done Steve. It's time for the judges verdict... Sharon!

Sharon: Er, beautiful song. I mean lyrically that song is amazing... fabulous song. You sang it really well Steve...But! (Sharon splays her palms open) ... there's always a but! (Steve grins) Erm, 4 ballads now, 4 crooning songs after 4 weeks. Is there another side to Steve that you're saving for us? (a few cheers) ...Or are we a one trick pony?

Kate: Are we?

Steve Brookstein grins broadly as Sharon wonders whether he is a 'one trick pony'!

Sharon: Talk to mamma!

Steve: Errr... you know what, yea ... mmm...

Kate: Tell Sharon!

Steve: I don't wanna say, I don't wanna say...erm...I mean I really hope that people vote for me and they'll see next week...because I've got one lined up...

Sharon: I didn't ask that! I just asked you if you were a one trick pony!! ?

Steve: No, no I'm not.

Sharon: Fine!

Steve: I'm not.

Sharon: Okay.

Kate: But you liked what Steve did tonight Sharon?

Sharon: Beautiful song and he sang it well. (cheers)

Kate: Louis! ... Thank you ....Louis!

Louis: Kate, I really, really like the song and I think he sang it okay. I got a little bit bored in the middle of it though. Honestly (groans and boos from the audience). You know, I did, I did, I got a little bit bored... I don't know why you didn't bother dressing up for the show! Everybody else did! (more boos)

Steve: ( looks down at his shirt and mutters something about its quality.)

Louis: You should have got dressed up. And one other thing... (groans)

Kate: (To Steve) Turn around... show him from the front and the back Steve.

Steve: No, no, no, no, no, no.

Louis: Y'know but it just... it just looks very casual to me compared with everybody else. (groans) ... and erm, I'd like to hear him sing an uptempo song. We've heard 4 crooning songs. I agree with Sharon... sing something uptempo.

Kate: Thank you Louis. Simon!

Simon: I always believe in giving the public what they want! (shrugs his shoulders - big cheers from the audience.)

Steve:  (sings some riffs from Luther Vandross's Never Too Much) ...never too much, never too much...

Simon: And... f-fashion advice from Louis Walsh! (laughter)

Louis: Yea, but I mean...

Simon: (smiling broadly) Yea right!

Kate: Thank you Louis.

Sharon: (heard in the background) Or from you!

Louis: (smiling) Or from youse.

Kate: Steve, were you happy with what you came out here and did tonight?

Steve: I love the song. I really do. I thoroughly enjoyed singing it. And I do like singing uptempo songs but this week I was happy with the choice. I really was, really was. (cheers)

Kate: Why should the public vote for you tonight Steve?

Steve: Erm...

Sharon: (muffled)

Steve: Sorry?

Sharon: When you come to make an album though, this is all about hopefully becoming a huge recording artist. Are you gonna be a crooner? Is that what you... all that you do?

Steve: (sings loudly...reaching his hand up with the high notes) I just don't want to stop...Oh my love! (big cheers)

Kate: I think we're going to have to leave it there. Thank you very much for now to Simon and Steve!
