Rowetta Satchell - MacArthur Park (Richard Harris)

Straight after last week's show Rowetta meets up with Simon Cowell and his angels (stylist Sinitta and vocal coach Annie Skates).

Simon knows he will be away in L.A. for Rowetta's week of preparation, so perhaps he thinks she needs some toughening up. After telling her she gave a fantastic performance of Over The Rainbow he warns her against complacency and over-confidence.

Rowetta assures him "I've always been able to sing and I've never made it, so I'll never be complacent."

Simon cranks up her motivation. Last week he told her she was a great singer, this week he wants to see "an amazing singer".

Before leaving Simon chooses an interesting song for Rowetta to sing for this week. MacArthur Park was a hit for Richard Harris back in 1968, ten years later Donna Summer revamped it into a disco classic. Its unusual lyrics demand a compelling performance to carry them off.

Rowetta delivers with a perfectly weighted and passionate rendition of the song, and she does it in her own style.

Rowetta raises a smile as she sings MacArthur Park on tonight's show. Is it anything to do with the lyrics?

An amazing performance? We think it was!

However Sharon seems to think it's the choice of song that is pretty amazing! ...

Kate: Okay, Rowetta it's time for the judges' verdict! ...Sharon!

Sharon: (pauses) Erm...it's not your fault Rowetta but I think that's quite the worse song. It belongs on the cooking channel, 'cause you're singing about cakes and baking and... I think lyrically I've always disliked that song 'cause it's... you're singing about food! So erm... (muted laughter from the audience) it's ... no really!

Simon: Then you should love it!

Sharon: Oh please behave!

Rowetta: It's not really about food Sharon though.

Sharon: I know but it's just, lyrically it doesn't do anything for me...

Rowetta: I know (smiling) Blame him. (Simon)

Simon: It's a metaphor.

Sharon: ...and I don't feel that you were comfortable doing that song.

Rowetta: I was, because somebody told me what it really meant and I got into it.

Sharon: What's it about then?

Rowetta: (shaking her head, smiling) I can't say on...

Sharon: Why?

Rowetta: It's rude.

Kate: Is it rude?

Rowetta: Really rude.

Sharon: I'm lost!

Kate: Whisper and I'll translate.

Rowetta: (kind of whispering) Sp**k on a yellow cotton dress.

Sharon: ...what number do you have to put the oven on for the cake?

Rowetta: (whispers to Simon) ...a yellow cotton dress (inaudible) ...a load of sp**k. (Simon grimaces in horror!)

Kate: She really can't go there Sharon! Not at this or any other time of night really!

Rowetta: (to Sharon) Even I won't say that!

Kate: (to Rowetta) I think they might have explained it wrong!

Sharon: Oh I don't get it. I don't get the song. I... much better songs...

Rowetta: (smiling playfully) Blame him, he chose it for me.

Sharon: Awww, gee I thought so. Terrible choice of song.

Rowetta Satchell thinks it's about time she had some negative comments from Louis and Sharon on the Panel.

Rowetta: But I liked it, I liked the song though.

Kate: What about her execution of the song. Did she come on and deliver it well for you Sharon?

Sharon: She always does, because Rowetta has an amazing personality, but I didn't like the song... And I just felt, maybe I'm wrong, but you weren't that comfortable in that song.

Kate: Thank you Sharon. Louis?

Louis: Rowetta, from day one I've always loved your voice. I think you're an amazing artist. Tonight I just think the song was too big for yer. (boos) I think Simon badly, badly picked the song. Y'know Rowetta I think you're amazing. Simon I think you picked the wrong song and you went to L.A. and you should have had a second choice and it was the wrong song.

Kate: Are they right Simon? Have you messed up tonight on Rowetta's behalf?

Simon: If you're talking about wrong choices of songs Louis then G4 wouldn't be in the competition. Erm... (cheers) I mean Pot, kettle and black! Look, thank god the audience at home are discerning enough to know that regardless of the song, which I thought she sang brilliantly by the way.

Louis: She did a very... (drowned out by crowd cheers)

Simon: You are judging... you are judging an artist here... and the 2 of you are trying to find any small fault here because...

Louis: The song's a very big part of the song!

Simon: ...this girl is a star!

Kate: But in fairness Simon, you did criticise their acts for their song choices.

Simon: Yea but you can't compare what, what, what... what happened last ye... last week with... with the Britney Spears song and her doing a Donna Summer classic! Sharon, thank god you weren't looking after Donna Summer's career!

Sharon: Why? It is in the toilet. Her career's in the toilet! If you hadn't have gone to L.A. and you'd have been here...

Simon: I chose the song before I went...

Sharon: ...concentrating on your artists.

Simon: No, I chose the song before I went away.

Sharon: Oh rubbish! You didn't hear her sing it before you left.

Louis: And also a lot of young people don't know the song. Most young people don't know this song.

Kate: Thank you. I'd like to pick up on Sharon's comments, thank you Louis. (To Rowetta:) Do you feel that you've been neglected by your mentor this week. Could you have done with Simon here Rowetta?

Rowetta: Not at all. He's been on the phone all the time. Erm, it's not that. (smiling) And I'm glad they've criticised me because I'm sick of all the compliments. I can't stand that...

Kate: Oh, it must be terrible!

Rowetta: No...no honestly, I stand here crying because I can't stand it, I'm embarrassed when they've been saying all nice things... And it's about time I got some negative feedback, because I love Sharon and Louis, they've been brilliant and supportive, but I like their honesty, like Simon's been honest... but I really, really do need your votes this week! (smiling) Because I'm on second, it's a curse being second! So please vote for me! (drowned out by crowd cheers)

Sharon: (shaking her fist in the air) Go Rowetta!

Rowetta: Because they (Sharon and Louis) don't want me anymore! (voice drowned out again)

Kate: Thank you very much for now... to Rowetta and Simon Cowell. Give it up for Rowetta!
