G4 - Circle Of Life (Elton John: From 'The Lion King')

Catching up on G4's week we hear Louis Walsh asking the boys if they "have recovered yet from Saturday and Britney?"

He's referring to the merciless lashing they received from judge Simon Cowell. Perhaps also it may be a tacit admission that last week's Britney song choice wasn't the best! Perhaps!

This week the boys put on their busking boots and head off to their roots. They revisit one of their old haunts by The Thames facing the Tate Modern. Here they perform the "G4 charity busk"!

G4 enjoy a good busk by the Thames, next to the Millennium bridge.
They  are well received by their audience of passing promenaders, who they treat to their splendid version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. G4's Matt is hoping the quartet "get the same reaction or similar at least on Saturday night."

It's time to find out. Jonathan enters stage-centre and sets himself down on a stair. Mike, Matt and Ben stand stage-rear.

Jon's voice penetrates the studio air in an explosive solo salvo. Straight away everyone knows Louis has made an excellent song choice this week!

Jonathan from G4 triggers the beginning of their performance tonight with an astonishing vocal solo.

Jonathan rises, jungle drums beat, and the backing vocals of his bandmates bellow to the beat. They swagger rhythmically towards the head of their pride.

As they join Jon the arrangement becomes more of an ensemble, although his piercing alto-tenor voice floats prominently above the rest throughout the number.

The G4 guys are slick-suited tonight, and look nothing like the myriad jungle creatures that sing this number in The Lion King musical.

It may be impossible for the audience to know which one is the elephant or the giraffe, but they can certainly feel the spirit of nature conveyed in the song. They provide G4 with the rapturous reception Matt was hoping for.

Will the judges feel the same way? Or will Simon try to make monkees out of them!?

After their poor reviews last week, G4 are perhaps a little nervous when they face the panel tonight after singing 'Circle Of Life'.

Kate: Okay G4, it's time for the judges verdict! Simon!

Simon: Guys, you were very lucky after the song Louis chose last week that you weren't doing that busking for real. I mean, seriously, I mean I don't think there's a group on earth who can go from Britney Spears to The Lion King in one week. I have to say something though... after that performance guys, I think you're back on form. That was great (cheers).

Kate: Thank you Simon. Sharon! ...Sharon?

Sharon: Gosh this is so hard for me to agree ever with erm... (she points at Simon and smiles) Mr Cowell here, but...

Simon: It's easy.

Sharon: No it's not! Believe me...

Simon: You'll learn.

Sharon: No, never! Never!

Simon: You'll learn, trust me!

Sharon: (showing Simon the hand) Never! (in drama queen mode) Never! A-hemm...(to G4) anyway gentlemen as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted erm... last week you took a huge risk. I still don't know what I think about last week but we're on to this week...

Simon: I do!

Sharon: Shhhh... oh behave! Stop interrupting! Erm (to G4) Fabulous. Just fabulous! Classic songs, classic voices...it just...(nods) well done! And to see you all grow, I mean as performers, it's amazing! ...very well done! (big cheers)

Kate: Thank you very much. Louis, not only were the band criticised last week but so were you as their manager and mentor. Do you agree with Simon? Have you got the boys back to where they belong?

Louis: Well we took a chance last week. We just had a little bit of fun and we wanted to change things, but these boys are so versatile. Simon... versatile. They can do anything they want, they're fantastic singers! I'm very proud of the boys tonight.

Kate: Okay, thank you very much.

Louis: I really am.

Kate: So boys...(applause)...do you feel that you're really progressing now with the competition?

Matt: Yea...erm it took us a while to get used to everything that was going on around us, but I think y'know we're getting into our stride now and hopefully the people at home will still vote for us.

Kate: Well you are now one of just six acts on the stage. We're getting into smaller, smaller numbers. Why should people pick up the phone for you guys tonight? Jonathan?

Jonathan: We're really, really growing as a group in front of the audience at home, live to about 8 million a week. And that's quite a scary situation to be in. I think that we're managing that quite...erm, quite comfortably in a way. Erm, our nerves are just a nightmare but we're managing to overcome that and... and doing some great performances. We felt last week was really, really strong. We had fun doing it, it's a shame Simon doesn't agree, but we enjoyed ourselves and that's what we're here to do. We love singing together, we love singing individually. But what we have together is really, really special, and we have great fun doing that... and we are really, really developing in front of people's eyes and we hope that they can keep us in to keep enjoying that with us.

Kate: Okay, well let's (applause) let's see how the voting goes for you tonight. For now, ladies and gentlemen, let's say thanks to Louis Walsh and G4!
