Tabby Callaghan - You Really Got Me (The Kinks)

"He represents all the young kids out there. He’s brilliant...and his name’s Tabby!" shouts an excited Sharon Osbourne.

Mind you she has had some misgivings about whether Tabby will remember the words of his songs in the live shows.

Vocal coach Mark Hudson recommends the process of writing out the lyrics. He tells Tabby "It’s an old trick. Ozzy does it, Stephen Tyler does it... they hand write what they’re looking at. You know why you do that? Because if it’s coming from the pen... to your hand... to the piece of paper... it kind of becomes your own."

Tabby is shown trying out Mark’s revolutionary technique! Does it work?

Why yes it does! Tabby performs The Kinks’ pop-rock classic ‘You Really Got Me’ without dropping a syllable.

Tabby loves his guitar and although this is a vocal contest he is allowed to carry his beloved instrument on stage. Whether we actually hear him playing it is hard to know, but he definitely gives it a few strums in between the verses.

His performance is full of energy and Kink-y enough to do the number proper justice.

After finishing his song to rapturous applause Tabby joins up with Sharon. He lifts her off the ground and she lets out a few excited shrieks. She seems really pleased with his performance.

How about the 2 other judges...did Tabby ‘get them going’ or did they see a few chinks in his Kinks?!

Louis: Kate, I thought Sharon was really, really brave putting somebody like Tabby through to a show like this. But he is fantastic, he’s Irish. He reminds me a little bit between Joan Jett and Prince... And too much eye-liner Tabby, but you’re fab!

Tabby: ...It’s all rock and roll!

Louis: You’re fab...you’re fab.

Simon: Well he’s the only person who’s ever worn more eye-liner than Sharon Osbourne. (laughter, though Sharon looks unimpressed!) I...I...I think...

Sharon: Personal...getting personal again!

Simon: I know, I know...that was just a joke.

Sharon: (mock laugh) ha haw!

Sharon Osbourne gives Tabby some moral support while he faces the Simon and Louis.

Simon: Okay...erm I, I think that Sharon took a risk. I think there were elements of the song where you sang flat...but you know what? I don’t think it matters. I think you have charisma and I think that...what I love about you Tabby is... is that you’re real. You’re not someone who’s come on here and said ‘I’m a rocker’. You’re someone who’s spent the last five, ten years living in the back of a van, trying to persue your dream. You’ve done some..you’ve done something brave. And you know what? I think you may have pulled it off!

Tabby: Thanks very much!

Kate: (To Sharon) Did your boy, your big gamble, come good tonight?

Sharon: Yes. Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m very, very proud of him. Really...I’m proud of all my team. I think all my team... in fact, really everyone’s done great tonight. Not just mine, but everyone’s great. And it’s hard...it’s so hard!

Kate: It is. It’s a tough call tonight...(To Tabby) You closed the show, did you close it in style as far as you’re concerned?

Tabby: Erm, ya...I like to think so yea. It’s just...it’s just great to rock out. Y’know...I think everyone in here was in the mood to rock out because there’s just been such brilliant performers tonight in general, y’know. Everybody...here.

Sharon: I’ll translate later for you...what he’s saying.

Tabby: No...because to be honest, me mouth’s as dry as Ghandi’s flip-flop...

Kate: Lovely!

Tabby: I can’t open me mouth...

Kate: Well go and get yourself a drink!
