G4 - Everybody Hurts (R.E.M.)

Louis describes the classically trained popsters as "Four great guys, four great voices. ‘G4’ very, very different."

One of vocal coach Dave Laudat’s main worries during G4’s preparation for tonight was whether thisa capella’ outfit would be able to adjust to using microphones. After ironing out gremlins in the rehearsal studios Dave sounded cautiously optimistic "As long as they listen to eachother they’ll do a great job."

It seems like practice makes perfect. They sing R.E.M.’s ‘Everybody Hurts’. Jonathan sings the solo sections beautifully and the harmonies really work. They go down a storm in the studio.

Sharon opens the batting for the panel...

Sharon: Now you know I loved you at the auditions. You just...ah...what can I say? You’re just fabulous. Love you all!

Kate: Simon Cowell?

Simon: Erm, this was always going to be very interesting for me, which was for the first time we were going to hear them with a backing track...because in the past they’ve been ‘a capella’ singers. Erm...and I have to say guys ... to me, that was sensational. (Audience Cheers Loudly)

Kate: Louis? (Waits for applause to die down) Louis, you’re effectively their manager right now. Did they do you proud?

G4 perform really well, despite not being used to using microphones.

Louis: Absolutely. These boys are fantastic! Simon...Simon even liked them. They’re fantastic... and you know Kate it’s very different than anything else in the charts and I think they’ve got a big, big long career. I’m really happy boys. Fantastic! (Cheers)

Kate: So guys...are you getting tearful again Jonathan? (Jonathan covers his eyes with his hand) ...do I need to hug you?

Jonathan: Oh go on then. (Kate hugs him!)

Kate: Arrrhhh.

Jonathan: ...Get another one in! (laughs)

Kate: Guys, it’s been constant praise all the way. Let’s see if the public agrees with them...but you’re happy with your performance yea?

G4: Yes

Kate: Very happy?

G4: Yes, thank you.

For the first time we get to hear G4 singing to a backing track.

After that set of plaudits who wouldn’t be happy!
